Sergeant Paul Mortimer died four years after contracting Hepatitis while removing clothing from a murder victim at a homicide scene near the intersection of Huron Avenue and North Western Avenue.
His health deteriorated as a result of the disease until his death.
Sergeant Mortimer had been with the Dayton Police Department for 21 years. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
Sergeant Mortimer's brother, Detective Sergeant William Mortimer, was shot and killed in the line of duty four years later while also serving with the Dayton Police Department.
