Daddy 23 years have come a gone but one thing remains the love a and respect I hold for you. You have always been my hero. And you always will be. When you was taken from us they rob my children and your grandchildren from knowing a very good man. But you memory lives on with every breathe I take. And with the help with Momma and Brandy I move trying more and more to be the man you wanted me to be. To be the man I loved and respected so so much. I want to be just like you daddy. I love you and I will never forget you. As long as I live your memory will live on as well. Daddy you my hero. And I can't want to see you again . I always said you was the rock that held us all together. But now I know Momma helped you because that woman has been my light since you left. I love you daddy.

As I sit here and reflect, I can't imagine 23 years have pass since that horrible night when my whole life changed forever, who would have known the pain would still linger, so many things we were robbed of, our grandchildren are mostly grown, now there are precious great grandchildren, oh how you would have loved them, we love you Bobby now and forever

This was my cousin and the reason I first discovered ODMP, I made my contribution in his memory and with it the memory of all officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice . Today I landed again on this site this ti,e by accident ,I opened the link I was reminded of the faded little stickers on my jeep's windshield and rear window sent to me years ago . So I guess it's way past time I donate because my stickers are really looking pretty rough . I've always held high respect for those behind a badge even if I've made a few bad choices in my younger days ,always gave respect and with that I got respect ,today's world is so different and I just don't get it ,if only the public understood what cop has to go through each day. Most of those he or she deals on calls will lie to their faces to get out of a jay walking ticket and that's the least of a cops worries , I'm AMAZED THAT 99.9% OF OFFICERS ARE AS respectful to the public as they are . My Dad Edgar Gongre was Chief of Police at this tiny town where Bobby was Deputy from 1974 -78 and my uncle Earl Gongre was chief there for many years .Bobby was deputy . Another note is that Bobby Thompson was also a tug boat captain on the Mississippi River on the day and at the moment of Bobby's funeral It was said that most ,if not all tug boat traffic on the river in the Louisiana /Mississippi area slowed to dead stop for a minute or two in Bobby 's memory .I'd like to request an email from your site so I can make another donation ,I do not have my wallet with me at this writing .Rest in Peace Bobby , Edgar and Earl

This was a wonderful family man that served his hometown proudly and as you can see would help anyone. It forever changed his family and the community ... you can't help or trust anyone. He was off duty and doing a good deed to help the 3 young men and they each played a part in taking his innocent life. God saw it all and judgement day will come for them. The affects are still strong today but as a Christian family there are no riots and murdering pepole to get back at the ones near and dear to the 3 murderers. There are grandchildren and great grand children that never got to meet their Pawpaw. I pray our country may find peace in one another and act like they had proper home training and if your raising was right it is time to get it straight now ... there is no excuses. I am personally speaking of someone I have known all my life and he was not at fault, was in good standing with the community, and someone that would help anyone ... he saw no color. Praying for the men and women of service/blue and our country.

Bobby, I have often shared how your life was taken senselessly when someone mentions the murder of an officer. My Mama (Eula Lestage Moore) was a cousin. I remember the day your life was so thoughtlessly taken. We were vacationing in Missouri when breaking news of the death of a Louisiana Police Officer interrupted a television show. The mention of Louisiana had my attention but the word Montgomery left me speechless. I of course called home where Mama confirmed that it indeed was true. This sickened me .... years later I was thrilled to have been able to honor one of your sons returning from Desert Storm in my class.... just like you, he is a hero! Bobby, thank you for your service to our great state of Louisiana. You nor your service will be forgotten. Time does not erase nor fill the void of the loss of loved ones. When teaching I would always speak of "fair weather " friends and "true blue" friends. Explaining that they (my students) could only truly count on those friends that were "true blue". Sir you were a "true blue" friend to all.....

Time may have passed but you are not forgotten. I believe as long as someone remembers you or speaks your name, you are still with us.
Thank you for your heroism.

As I read these reflections it warms my heart that so many take time to remember Bobby, he was a good father, loved his time with family, loving being a grandfather, and all that ended on a rainy night. But life goes on somehow, never the same, you remember the good times, wonder what would have been, wishing with your whole heart things could have been different, Thanks Mr Dan Settle and please thank your student

This is one of the most upsetting stories I've ever heard. It takes a lot of compassion for an officer to take this type of risk for the purpose of assisting others. He is truly an honorable man, and may he rest in paradise.

My name is Dan Settle and I am a criminal justice instructor in San Marcos, California. Today, one of my students did a research project on Deputy Marshal Bobby Thompson. It sounds as if he was a wonderful family man and dedicated peace officer. His story was told to all of the students in my class. May you find comfort knowing that others appreciate his service to the community.
