Just to make sense of the reflections and the narrative - after research was completed by Chief Robert Bellan, Jr; Sgt. Matt Grubb and me the rest of the story was discovered in regards to Chief Moses, who actually held the rank of Constable, which was common in that day and was the police officer for the township. He was killed by the Maug gang during the interruption of a robbery attempt and the killers were later brought to justice.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 81rst anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
Rest In Peace.

I just came across the memorial honoring you, Chief. I must say that I am deeply touched by a couple of things. for one thing, the coward who murdered you was never caught. I will trust that God has dealt with the coward. Secondly, I am touched that Kim Weigand, Mom of Sgt. Michael C. Weigand E.O.W. 9/14/2008 found you and honored you. May God bless the entire Moses AND Weigand families You will NEVER be forgotten and will FOREVER be a hero!

Chief,
It's been many years since I found your name at the library and took it to Ross Twp.to finally have you honored for the hero you are and always will be. Know that we placed a plaque on the township building in your honor for all to see in the future. Please know you will never be forgotten by anyone but I hold a special place in my heart for you and will honor you every year on your anniversay date. Please, I know you already have, but watch over my son in heaven, he's also a fellow officer killed in the line of duty.
With deepest respect,
Kim Weigand

Chief Vernon Porter Moses,
You are a law officer hero of the past who stands tall till this day. You stood for justice and did not fail your community in keeping order and peace. That no one was charged with your slaying is a stain on those you worked to protect. Somewhere somebody knows something and does not speak. If they, too, have passed on then they have guarded the information that now will be used to judge them. We'll always remember you as a soldier of the law. Well done, chief...well done.

Vernon, such a shame that no one was brought to justice. However, they will stand before the Almighty, and he will judge them. Rest now, and thank you.
