Reflections for Sergeant Rolland Carl Morton

I am all too familiar with the dangers of earthquakes, having grown up in Santa Monica, where I had my first flight lesson. Your choice of duty is admirable and imagine I that you and your colleagues brought much comfort to your community. This community thanks you for your service, and we remain indebted to you for paving the way for aviation and law enforcement in Santa Monica. Forever blue skies.

I spoke with your grandaughter and found that your son passed away this year. It reminded me to check in on all the officers that had given their lifes while on the job. So I wanted to stop in once more to thank you and others like you that served so long ago passing down a tradition that we all believe so strongly when we first wear a badge. A tradition of valuing others more than ourselves, a tradition of service to our fellow mankind and a belief that society is inherently good and deserves watchman to protect it from all that would seek to harm it. I hope your reunion with your son was sweet.

I met a member of your family just recently. Your granddaughter. She said your wife just recently passed away and she showed me your badge with the memorial engraving on the back sitting in its box as it was on that day in 1933 when it was given to your family. We talked about you. They still have that small token of your service and they value it and will pass your story down through generations like it should.

I did not know you, however for 17+ years I walked out of the station and viewed your plaque on the wall. I will not forget you and those like you who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
