As we grow closer to another year without you, I find myself missing you more and more. Not a single day goes by that I don't think about you. It makes me so happy and proud to see all the wonderful comments describing what I already knew about you. I hope you are proud and are enjoying watching those grand babies of yours. We love you and miss you so much Dad!! ♡

It will soon be 20 years since Greg ' s death. Even now when I pass the wreck scene area I remember that night. A fellow friend / Deputy and friend / State Trooper and I were returning from the Brooks & Dunn concert in Raleigh. We drove right by the accident scene, seen all the Emergency vehicle's and thought it was just another Friday night wreck. We would be shocked just minutes later when stopping to each at the I-Hop. Two of our fellow Deputies were working security at the restaurant and seen us park. Both met us in the parking lot and told us Greg had just been killed in a car crash. I then realized we had just passed the crash scene. At that time we were no longer hungry, the concert did not matter.
Greg, one of my best friends, had introduced me to the my ex - wife and we had just divorced. Greg had showed me support as a brother with no agenda. We had served in the Army National Guard as Sergeants and Howitzer Gun section chiefs. We had attended and completed the Army Special Weapons school together at Ft Bragg. Made many trip to train at Army bases across the country. I remembered the e
excitement he had when his son and daughter were born. When Greg applied with the Sheriff's Office and High Point Police Department I was excited for him. Soon he was offered positions with both agencies on the same day. He called me and was undecided. I urged him to be a Deputy Sheriff. He excelled, took pride in wearing the uniform and was a big part in starting the Sheriff's Office history. Greg, Ken White sell and I had just attended the funeral of one of two Charlotte Police Officers that had been killed in the line of duty. Little did we know that just weeks later Ken and I would be folding the American flag over Greg ' s casket. Greg was one of the solid men of character and pprofessionalism I ever had the honor of knowing. He touched my life in a the most positive way. If you needed him for anything he wa there without hesitation. He was all Red, White and Blue. Honorable and the example of a Tram Player. Never a Me, I and selfish person. I think about him often. I am sure you are soaring with the Angels and being a Guardian Angel looking over us.
Greg is not forgotten, the men and women of the Sheriff's Office honor him often during the year.

Greg was not only a great officer--he was an incredible man. I remember his wicked smile, his quick laugh and his ability to make you smile no matter what kind of day you were having.
More than 19 years have passed, but time can't steal wonderful memories from our minds nor our hearts.

I ran across this site while looking for information on response times for the Guilford County Sheriff's Department. I remember when this tragedy ocurred, but had let it slip with the passage of time. I was injured in a high speed chase while serving with the same department in 1986, and had to retire three years later after going through every medical procedure known to man. I feel for the family, and can tell you first hand how quickly one's life can be permanently altered. May his memory remain strong with all his brother officers everywhere.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Greg Hawks was my friend. We worked together, made arrests together, and sometimes fought side by side. He was a good man and I still think of him often. I'll see you when I get there Greg.

I will never forget Greg or his smiling face. This year is the 12th anniversary of his death and this year as in all years I will reflect on that holiday weekend and say a prayer for his family.
Thanks Greg for making my job enjoyable and for taking your assignment that night with your usual jokester attitude.
You will always be remembered.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).
We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.
These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.
