Reflections for Sergeant Charles Ebert Murray, Jr.

Chuck, you are missed so much. Another year without you. It seems like yesterday you were holding your twin god daughters that only weighed 4 lbs each. You were a natural with them. They loved you so much. Your memory lives on.

I visit catlett quite often and came across the railroad track where you lost your life. Feeling so sad that you died so young I got to wonderin who you were as a person. Reading all of the remembrances from your friends and family you were a special human being and loved by so many. I am a stranger to you but I often think of you and still visit those railroad tracks to this day. Thank you for your service Sgt. Murray. A big thanx to you all for letting me get to know the man I visit at the tracks in catlett from your story's. Rest easy sir I salute you!

I am overjoyed to have finally located this page honoring Sgt. Murray. He has been in my thoughts off and on through the years: I was a passenger on the AMTRAK train that ended his life.

I recall the moment vividly: I was sitting at a window seat when a large amount of paper suddenly blew past. My first thoughts was that must have been some refuse on the track. Moments later a car tire passed the window. My immediate thoughts were then 'please, I hope it's not a collision & if so that no one is hurt'. The rest of the story is known all too well.

To his colleagues and his family, please know that I remember him. Continue to honor his memory.

Chuck, It has now been 25 years since you left this earth. However, you have never left my heart. So many things have happened in that time,so many events you could only see from heaven but I knew you were there. You touched a lot of lives in the short time you were here. Thanks for being my special guardian angel.
Forever,
Bea

As we come upon the 25 year anniversary of your death, I still can remember vividly when I heard that we had lost a Deputy. I pretty much collapsed on the bedroom floor with a soul crushing feeling that it was someone I knew. Was it the one I had loved, or someone I had known my entire life, or was it someone I had gone to school with? But oh when I heard your name, it was gut wrenching because I knew that your wife, family, friends and fellow Deputies had lost someone so precious to them. Remembering the day that I first met you, I still smile. Lord Chuck, only you could look that good in blue jean overalls and no shirt. You had a way of making everyone at ease around you and I don't believe you ever met a stranger. Your loss was a great one - you touched so many lives in your short time on earth. Rest easy my guardian angel because yes, I feel your presence when I am most fearful and hear things go bump in the night.

Chuck, I still miss the antics that we used to get into when we worked together at the Sheriff's Office. You made me feel secure in my world, you were my partner and my friend. I always felt that way because, as you were running the road, I was running the jail and no matter what, I knew you had my back! We were truly a team and there was nothing we couldn't accomplish together as a shift!! I still have your picture over my sun visor in my car, I feel like you travel with me everyday. I remember Col. Jenkins standing in the church on the day of your funeral telling us how you would be watching over us! I believe it and I miss you everyday!

Chuck, I think of you often and miss you so much. I fondly remember the first time we met, the party in Marshall, you holding my twins for the first time, and your wedding! You were a wonderful friend, "brother-in-law", and godfather to my daughters, Ashley & April; they speak of you often esp. over the years at birthdays, graduations from high school & college, any special occasion and esp. when April got married...she married a police officer and I think you would really like him. You've celebrated with us thru the years! Thanks for being our guardian angel. Love you!!

20 years it has been 20 years today I can still remember running calls with you and driving you around cuz you were too tired to drive. I still remember the conversation we were having on the radio when you were suddenly taken from us. I made you a promise that I would always be there until the end and I am comforted knowing that you heard my voice just before you left this earth. Miss you so much You will never be forgotten Rest in Peace my friend

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
