Reflections for Patrolman William A. Miscannon
7-04-09
Hi Dad,
I worked for the Fallen Heroes Ride this year and it's my second year for Keith's Memorial Ride. This year, all the proceeds from Keith's ride go to the scholarship in your name in Keith's memory at Owens. I hope you and Keith have become good friends as I have with the Dressel family. They're such a wonderful family to know. I always get teary eyed at such events and gatherings. I usually hear a few stories of you and appreciate every thing I learn as I was only 10 when you were taken from us.
You'd be so proud of Jared.....he graduated with his bachelor's (in three years) in criminal justice and will start at the Houston Police Academy in August. He's following in your footsteps...I'm so proud of the work he's done to honor you. He's getting married next Saturday and I'll be in Houston for his wedding. He picked the same day as Keith's ride to get married...the stinker! = )
To those of you who leave reflections on dad's page, I thank you for your time and concern. I check in frequently and your words are appreciated.
One of these days..........

The last time I wore a Uniform of the Toledo PD was for the march to the resting place for Officer Miscannon. I still remember his badge number, not my own. I remember how the idoits fire bombed the funeral home and wrote "Die Pigs" on the window. I will never forget. Roger Browning

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Even though I did not know Patrolman Miscannon I feel so much sorrow for the loss of this oficer. How cruel our world is, back when he was shot, and even now it seems that things get harder to maintain a decent life. If it were not for our fine officers we would really be destroyed. God bless the family of this true American hero.

Mr Miscannon's family, I know personally that no matter how much time pasts you feel the loss like it was yesterday. Today more so then yesterday. You are all in my prayers and heart today and everyday. I know with all that is going on with Officer Dressel's trial of the kid that killed him it has to be hard on you. God Bless and if you want to join my group its still open to anyone of the family. Just email me [email protected] There are a great number of people there from recent and very past police survivors that love to help and share their stories.
God Bless and peace on this painful day...

Although I did not know Officer Miscannon personally, as a police officer I recognize the sacrifice he made for his family, his job and the city/people that he was sworn to protect. A few years ago I travelled to Washington DC and visited the police memorial. I immediately went to look for Officer Miscannon's name and was deeply affected standing among the names men and women who have given their lives to protect others. To the family of William Miscannon...always know that your father will be remembered as a hero and a very brave man who dedicated his life to protect all of the citizens of Toledo during a time of chaosis and unrest in our community. He will always be remembered...and his sacrifice never forgotten...

To Diane and the entire Miscannon family,
Your father was a hero, but you already know that. I'm glad to see that you come to visit this page from time to time. I'm married to a Toledo police detective and I regret that the distant date of your father's tragedy is one of the things that kept me from worrying so much about my own husband until recent events. I know now that was only luck. The other thing I truly know now is how wonderful a family the TPD is. I hope that you know you'll always be a part of it. We will never forget.

Patrolman Miscannon,
I have been an officer with TPD for almost 14 years now. I remember in the academy people talking about you. There was a lot of significance to your name. I remember when I became and officer, my concerned mother asked how long it had been since and officer was killed in Toledo. I knew your date by heart. It really had some meaning for me. It gave my mother some relief.
I am saddened by the events that took you from us. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends. I recently lost an academy classmate in Keith a month ago. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him or you for that matter. You are a hero. Watch out for us. Thank you for your service. You will never be forgotten.

I periodically come to this page and as always, I appreciate all the reflections left for my dad/family. It's been 36 1/2 years since dad was shot and killed in the line of duty and the last Toledo Police officer to die as such up until two weeks ago. Keith Dressel, an undercover officer for TPD, was recently shot and killed in the line of duty. I was at Keith's viewing for the full two days, along with other members of C.O.P.S., making and handing out blue ribbons to honor Keith. It was a tremendous turnout, but I don't ever want to do that again. Again, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Officer Miscannon has been in my thoughts. I recently traveled from home in Florida to honor the life of my friend, TPD Det. Keith Dressel whose life ended, being a great Cop! As a Police Officer in Tampa. Fl I know, all to well, the dangers of this job. I was too young to remember the last time the Toledo Police Department lost an officer. I wanted to learn more about it, so I called my father. He is a retired Toledo Police Officer (George Gadoury) and an academy classmate of Officer Miscannon. He remebered the impact the loss had on the Police Department. He stated " I always looked foward to wearing that uniform, but not on that day. I knew I was not getting dressed to do police work, but instead to bury a co-worker. It was a tough day for us."
To the Miscannon Family, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

My father was also a Toledo Police Officer who retired in 1977. I can remember very well the day Officer Miscannon was killed. Now, 37 years later, we are again mourning the loss of another fine officer. I am so sorry that you grew up with out your father but know that he has watched over you all these years. I will continue to remember him and his sacrifice.

I was in High School and it seems like yesterday that we heard of the tragic news of Patrolman Miscannon. A sad time for Toledo. His children left without a Father. I live across the country now but I'll never forget.

It has been thirty six years since we lost our brother, twenty three years before I pinned on my badge and donned my gun. I pray that another thirty years pass before we must cover our badges with that solemn black ribbon...thirty years times ten.
May God bless and watch over us all.

36 years ago today, this dedicated man reported to protect and serve family, friends, people and the city he loved. Not knowing what that early Friday morning held, he responded where duty called. The truth behind the tragic events that unfolded that morning will never be known. three young children lost a father and the city one of it's own. Lest we forget.

Periodically, I look at this page. It touches me that others remember my father and leave messages. It's such a comfort. Friday, May 19th, is the tribute to fallen officers in Northwest Ohio. It's bittersweet for me.....dad is remembered, but his death, senseless and unsolved. A killer roams the streets freely while three children grew up without a father, grandchildren he never knew, weddings, graduations, etc. missed. A hole will be forever in my heart. Thank you to those that remember my father and all the others before him. Let's pray that none follow. (Dad is the last fallen officer, as of the above date in this area. His death, Sept. 18, 1970, D.O.A.,1:00 a.m.) God Bless.....diane
