I served on the Kansas Highway Patrol with my friend Sgt
Eldon Miller. One of my first assignments as a Recruit Trooper was to work at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson where I had the privilege of working intersection traffic control with Eldon. During that brief period of days during the fair, I became acquainted and became friends with Eldon. A few years later, he and another Patrol friend, Dudley Cranston, would come to Mankatp to hunt pheasants as both had been stationed at Mankato previously. As a young trooper, I felt extremely fortunate to be in their presence and hear their many stories. I was patrolling US 36 7 miles west of Mankato when the report of his death was broadcast over my patrol radio. That was one of my saddest memories of my 27 years service with the KHP.

I worked on the reporting side for the Kansas City Star and Times from 1966 through 1972 and was able to pass through police lines because I was known to the Overland Park officers. Sgt. Miller was a very brave man who showed no fear in providing protection for the many officers involved in what can only be described as the civilian equivalent of a firefight. His loss was acutely felt. I have often thought about (and said a prayer) for Sgt. Miller and his family in the 45 years since his heroic death.
