Reflections for Officer Joseph Mareno
Officer Mareno was my Great Grandfather. One of his two daughters was my Grandmother and my Dad's mother. Sadly, she had a similar fate as his and died all too young, when my father was in his teens and my uncle seven years younger. However, Officer Mareno's life of service to others certainly was echoed in his grandchildren as my Dad served twenty years in the US Navy (both Korean and VN wars) and his brother spent a lifetime as a minister and has now retired to Baton Rouge.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 89th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be remembered and revered.
The irony of being killed on your last day on the job after so many years as a dedicated public servant must have made your tragic death even more devastating to your family and department.
Rest In Peace

Joe, since we share the same last name, and my brother, son and uncle are all Joseph Merino, I definitely won't be forgetting you. Your story is a tragic one (dying on your last day) as so many of these stories are. I know you'll be watching. Thanks for your service.
