Reflections for Police Officer Michael A. McNew

Mac was my dads (carl ring) partner in the 5th dist. Mike and my dad would pick my little sister and I up from Holy Trinity school on the Tri Bikes and take us to the old station house on Penrose Ave or Crown Candy on St Louis Ave....He and my dad were two of the finest officers I knew. They are partners once again in heaven..RIP

Mac,
Soon it will be the 32nd anniversary (09/09/1989) of Officer Mike McNew's death. I arrived at roll call at 7:00 a.m. in the 3rd District ready for duty, to be told of the tragic accident, my knees buckled and I immediately thought about your family.
You were a great partner and taught me many things about policing.
Those terrible hours and days that followed are etched into my mind forever. I think of you often.
Mac, was a great guy, a fantastic father and husband. He wore his uniform proudly and with honor.
Mac, the time I was able to spend with your family was precious and unforgettable. I will never forget them or you my friend.

I had an opportunity to partner with Mike on and off when he came to the 3rd District and I loved evry minute of our shifts together. I learned alot from Mike in our short time together as well as laughing harder than I can ever remember at some of Mike's stories.

He was a great guy and I can still remember vividly Mike talking about getting home to go swimming with Joe and Courney, his two children.

Such a senseless loss.

Just today I was reviewing the roster of Class 30, Greater St. Louis Police Academy that graduated May 10, 1973, and saw your name among the graduates. It was just a reminder that you made the ultimate sacrifice for those you served, and the times we had in the academy. Thanks, Mike, rest in peace.

Mike, here it is almost 42 years since I first met you when we were assigned to Company 566 in Great lakes naval Center.
For some reason I have been thinking about you all week.
We were good friends in boot camp and when we finished, we met up when we were on leave and visited your H.S. We wore our new uniforms proudly before embarking on our careers in the USN.
We lost contact for a long time as happens when life goes on.
I was devistated by your death. I would ,sometime, to meet your family.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 20th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Mike, after all these years I still think of you. I miss our friendship and the times we had at choir practice or shift change parties. You also taught me much about policing, which I now pass on to other young officers. You even taught me to enjoy my coffee black. I know that you never achieved your dream of being a detective but it never made you less a cop. Selfless and always first to help a brother/sister in blue, God Bless you and your family!

To my dear friend not only on duty but off. You left us way too soon. You were a "Old School" policeman and we always knew you were watching our backs. I'm proud to have been your riding partner at times ....and your friend.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Today is the 15th anniversay of Officer Mike McNew's death. I was there when Mike lost his life in the line of duty. I went to his home at 4am to tell his wife about the tragic accident. Those terrible hours and days that followed are etched into my mind forever.
I recently saw Mike's widow and their son Joe. They are doing well but their memories of that horrible night have not faded. Mike was a great guy, a wonderful father and husband. He wore his uniform proudly and with honor.

Please remember the McNew family in your prayers today.
