Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Richard Robert McHale

I was 11 years old when this happened. Both my parents worked for KCSO at the time. Of course I was too young to know the immediate impact. Being a police officer for 19 years now, I know the impact. I go up to the Police Officers Memorial in Sacramento every year and I see your name on the wall. Having been in this profession and lost members of our own, I now understand the impact. Even though I did not know you, I do think of you and your family.

Rick, a friend of my husband, was not just a friend from work. When my husband was in undercover he made a point to, while I was pregnant with a risk pregnany, come to our house weekly (if not more often) to check in on me. He made sure I had food in the kitchen, my yards were mowed and edged, and then just sat and talked to me so that I didn't feel abandoned. He had mothers of at risk kids that he interacted with ride the bus to come to his funeral.
He was one of the real humans.

Rick, the memory of responding to that call that day has never left me. You were known as a go getter and a great cop. After my retirement I couldn’t help but think you didn’t make it to the end. I have spoken of you over the years and I hope that my continued service in law enforcement had done justice to your untimely death. You memory lives on with all who step up and serve with pride and honor.

Rick, I was 18 almost 19 when you were killed. I was at HQ when the incident went down and remember thinking, this can't be happening I had just talked to you about coming out on a ride along (I was an explorer) and you told me, "sure come out we will cite some cows". You were one of most respected deputies in the department and everyone had nothing but words of respect for you. You were taken too soon! I visit your grave often along with Rich Maxwell's. Rest well warrior

Hey Rick, it's been so long. I still feel the sting of your untimely passing. You were my best friend and my favorite person to hang out with. I often go through the football games in my memories where you made great catches on one of my errant passes.....Thanks again for making me look good, you always had a way of doing that to everyone who loved you. I sure did and still do. The tears that flow as I'm writing this are sad indeed, yet I know I'll see you in heaven soon and I am excited for that glorious day. I'm not sure even today if I've ever known a better or more thoughtful man. I'll be seeing you soon brother.

I was just sharing a story about you 'Ricky' and looked you up. I spoke with your brother back in 94 and he told me about you. I was your girlfriend in 4th and 5th grade until you moved. I was devastated! Saw you last when you came by to visit in 74. Many short but fond memories. First boy I went steady with!

Rick,
Already I was thinking of you last week leading up to March 3rd, the 24th anniversary of your death, when two local officers were gunned down in Santa Cruz on February 26th. We laid flowers at their memorial and cried for you and the newest fallen officers. I still think of you often, cousin Rick. I have many good memories of you from my childhood. You are a hero and I wish that my kids could have met you. :-)
Love, Judy. 3/4/13
