Reflections for Detective Mary Pearl McCord

I grew up in Montgomery Alabama, and when Detective McCord joined the force, there was so much pride from the Black community. If I remember correctly, the Alabama Journal and/or the Montgomery Advertiser had an article about her joining the force. And I think prior to wearing the badge, she played basketball for Alabama State University, but those details I am not sure of, and my memory fades me in those matters. But what I will never forget, is watching the news and hearing that Detective McCord was gunned down in the line of duty. I was probably 11 years old at the time. I just remember crying my eyes out! I don't know if I cried because she was so young, or that she had not been on the force that long, or just that death is sad, period. Rest in peace Detective McCord!

It wasn't Cagney & Lacey, nor Hill Street Blues, nor Charlie's Angels, but a beautiful, strong, reserved and well respected female officer I had the pleasure to meet and shake hands with, I a young female I had the pleasure to meet growing up as a child on the West side of Montgomery, Alabama. That introduction with that handshake I will not ever forget. I ate law, slept law, studied law, and dreamed of law because of you that flame flickers. Rest in peace "Blue Angel Mary McCord"

Our family will never forget the loss, we lived in different cities, but our Aunt made sure we knew our relatives and especially the ones that were law enforcement officers. Our cousin sent me a copy of your obituary. I am sorry we never got a chance to meet. RIP

Detective McCord,
Your EOW date was within two days of my full time hire date. Much of my career was spent working dope and major crimes with female partners. I treasure you all. Godspeed sweet angel.

Mary,
Have a 5 by 7 picture of you that I took in the MPD break room. It has been with me since God took you home. Was
crushed and bitter that someone that was such a good friend,
Academy classmate, good person and officer was taken in that manner. After getting the memorial program and seeing
that your family had chosen that particular picture to use on
the front of the program it made me feel as if it was your /Gods way of giving me some peace/healing. Still smile when
thinking of Margie, Renee, myself and you taking out all the
stress in the ladies room.

As far back as I can remember, all you ever wanted to do was be a cop. When I think of you, I remember your radiant smile , the laughs we shared at ASU and the incredible pain I felt upon losing you. There is still a large void in my life from your absence. Gone too soon, but never forgotten
