Sgt. Corwin "Stretch" McConkey was my father. Sgt. Gary McConkey was my brother, Both, as well as my mother, Betty Stillman McConkey Carr are deceased, as is Gary and my step-father, Pete Carr. Mom remarried several years after Dad's death. At the time of Dad's KIA, mom was 31, Gary was six and I was eight. These two policeman were big men with big hearts and humor. Dad was also a veteran of the US Navy in WWII, serving in the South Pacific,

I never had the opportunity to meet Sgt. Corwin McConkey however i had the pleasure to work with his son Gary who also joined the Illinois State Police and retired as a master sergeant following a successful career. Gary frequently talked about his father who was murdered in the line of duty. Sgt. Gary McConkey was an awesome leader and police officer. Sgt. Corwin McConkey, we will never forget your service and sacrifice.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the sixty-first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
