Sept 5th, 1971, a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Dewie, you checked me in at 10am that morning, as the Game Land's residing warden, as you did many times when I fly fished Upper Creek or Steeles Creek during those years. I was fishing above the Upper Creek Bridge when Dallas Keys shot you in a cowardly act. The shot(s) went unnoticed as running water around my legs masked them. Little did I know that when I left and crossed that bridge at 3 pm, your body laid at the edge of the creek just below there.

Your wife Amelia checked me out and handed back my license at around 3:15 pm and we had no idea that by that time, you had been dead for 2 hours.

Such a haunting day that comes to mind all too often. I was one of 4 people who last saw you alive, your wife, your son, me, and the man who killed you. And SHAME on Burke County for handing down a measly 10-year 2nd degree murder charge to a man who shot a law enforcement officer in the back over 2 under-sized rainbow trout!! All officers deserve more respect than this!

I sprayed big poison ivy patches and vines around your memorial stone a few short years ago and then raised the stone above the ground level, covered with silt after years of flooding and erosion. When in that area, I always stand at your stone for a moment to reflect on your service and how you treated that area (Daniel Boone Refuge) as if it were your own.

Thank you Mr McCall for your service. You were murdered 1 month before I was born. Now I have two years left to retire as a Game Warden for the NCWRC. I thank the good lord for keeping me safe all these years doing the same thing you were doing that very day. Your memory will never be forgotten sir. Sad there wasn’t better justice of 6 years given to your murderer.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 38th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg , CA police officer.

Your murderer serving only six years was woefully inadequate.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Officer McCall was a friend of my dad's and I remember when he was killed. My dad always spoke very highly of Officer McCall; he was a credit to NC and a brave protector of our wildlife. His spirit lives on in the streams and mountains he bravely worked in.
