On today, the 90th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of the District of Columbia. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

I came across this site while looking for some information about my great uncle, Officer John Francis McAuliffe. My great aunt, Sister Eleanor McAuliffe (a Catholic Nun) first told me about my great uncle and how he had passed. My grandfather, James S. McAuliffe joined the Montgomery County Maryland Police force in 1929, the same year that his brother was killed in the line of duty. My grandfather served for 40 years including the last 16 as Chief (Superintendant). Another of his brothers, Thomas Joseph McAuliffe served on the Metropolitan Police Department for over 20 years. Before my great uncle died he requested that the man who shot him not be given the death penalty and he was in fact spared a death sentence. Although he died before he had a chance to have a family he will never be forgotten and I know he would have been extremely proud of his brothers service.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 83rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never dimishes respect and you will always be honored and revered.

A Part Of America Died


Somebody killed a policeman today
And a part of America died...
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too,
Just as if he had gone off to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast
To his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.

"My Brother"

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his community and to his country.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.

He was a cop.

Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother.

Rest easy Brother McAuliffe, we have the watch...

You answered the call and made the ultimate sacrifice. Rest easy in God's kingdom and watch over us as we continue the battle here on earth!!!

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family, friends and all the members of the Metropolitan Police Department. We were made safer by his service and we all suffer their tragic loss. The family of Officer McAuliffe deserves our appreciation and gratitude for their sacrifice. No greater love has a man than the will to give his life for another. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Officer McAuliffe is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
