Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Special Agent James Columbus Mayo, Jr.

Dad,
It has been 37 years since you left us. As I sit here reflecting and getting ready to head to your grave site in Crocker, MO. to honor you for Memorial Day. It still is fresh in my mind. It still hurts so bad, to know your grandchildren didn't get to know you or their great grandpa, James Columbus Mayo Sr who served our country also in the Air Force. I miss you like it was yesterday.

I am reading your Bible this morning before writing this. You were talking about the Great Commission and our responsibility to reach the lost. I am so thankful that I know I and your grandchildren will get to meet you again in Heaven, if they all continue to follow in your footsteps of Faith in God.

James Dean Mayo is now 28 yrs old, Gabriel is 24, Jayden is 15, Jude is 13 and Jolie is 3. Oh, how you would love them all and they would love you!!

I wanted to take a moment and Honor you for just being my dad. As the Bible says in Exodus 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you." It doesn't say, Honor them if they deserve it or have earned it, or were perfect and never made any mistakes. It just says Honor them!

So, I choose to honor you and teach your grandchildren how to honor you. For all the things you did teach us before you passed away. Hard work, perseverance, learning, sticking to the task at hand. But most importantly that no matter how many mistakes or sins we commit, we can always run to our real father, God. He will receive us with open arms!

Dad, Thank You for the man that you were and the man you were striving to become!

Love you so much!!
Michael

Its been 22 years and seems like yesterday when the two men in uniform showed up at the door to tell us. Dad you are not forgotten.

Dad its been twenty-one years now, I can still remember the day when it happened. Friday after school getting the call and not believing it. Then the two Army guys in uniform showing up at the front door. We all miss you much and did not get to spend enough time with you. Someday we will be together again.

Dad, we all miss you so much. I wish my wife and two sons James Dean 12, and Gabriel Michael 7 would have had the chance to meet you. I tell them of you often. They are very athletic like you. I run alot like you used to. I remember going for a run with you in Ft. Wood when I was 15. How I took off and ran ahead of you. And how I wore out shortly after and you came trotting on by me again and kept going and going. I think of that when I am running. I've done alot of 5k and 10k runs. And once a year for the past three years I've done a 50k race in Arkansas. I havn't done a marathon like you yet though. I am now training to get my times down to run Boston.
The boys are starting to run some races also. I'm proud of them. They are both so much fun you would love them so much. I could just see you rolling on the floor with them wrestling. Man I miss you so much. There are so many times I could have used your advice and a hug from you. I just pray that some day we will meet again in Heaven.
Love Always Your Son
Michael

SA Mayo,

My father, Sgt. Larry Lamb, served in the Army with you in the late 1970's at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. In fact, as I sit here typing this, he is telling me that the two of you went to school together at Ft. Mcclellan, AL. He is also telling me that you two were partners.

Today, we (my dad & I) visited the LE memorial in Washington DC and found your name.

I have followed in my father's footsteps and am a Deputy Sheriff in Colorado Springs, CO, as I see your son has traveled on your same path.

SA Mayo, you may be gone, but you are definitely not forgotten.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dear Mayo Family,
I saw the reflection tonight as it was featured and the uniform caught my eye. We are so sorry for the loss of Agent Mayo. We never stop missing them and our family has walked in your same shoes. We lost our son while serving in the Army on military police patrol. Just know that he will never be forgotten. Thank you Agent Mayo for your service. May your family remember all the good times you shared.
