Reflections for Sheriff Robert Eli Martin
Here is an excerpt from our family history:
Robert was a very caring person. When he was Sheriff of Hansford Co. Texas he refused to put prisoners in the makeshift cells dug in the sides of the basement of the courthouse. He, instead would handcuff the prisoners to him and they ate , slept etc with Sheriff Martin till trial. The man who killed him had been cuffed to Martin several times before killing the Sheriff. When on the trail if there were prisoners he would tell them he would untie them so they could sleep better if they promised not to run away. He was a very trusting man.
Everyone in the community really like Sheriff Martin. The "old Timers" say the will never forget him and the tragedy of his murder.

Dear Sheriff RE Martin, I am your great granddaughter, ASW. I am so sad that your life ended so young and tragically. You gave so much to your community in so many other ways. I have studied your life and see that you served as a Freemason, and Hansford County Comptroller as well as multitudes of community building efforts. Your untimely and needless murder has impacted many of your descendants. You have inspired others in our family to also serve a a protector of the people. We fondly speak of you and our profound respect for law enforcement officials.

Thank you Phyllis, I am the grand daughter of Sheriff Robert E. Martin. He started a long line of Lawmen in our family that span three generations. Sheriff, Chief of police, Colorado State Marshall, Deputy Sheriff, and highway patrol officer. I am very proud of all of them. I know the memory of your son will live on forever. The sacrifice our brave law officers give in their unselfish service to their community is overwhelming. Bless you and each one of our fine young men.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 111th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never dimishes respect, and your memory will always be honored and revered. How awful that your son who followed in your footsteps met the same fate..
Rest In Peace
