I first learned of Don Martin in a letter written by his dear friend who chose to remain anonymous. The letter was written to Father Bill Hagerty SJ by a retreatant at Milford Spiritual Center in 1989. The author of the letter felt compelled to write to Father Hagerty, the retreat facilitator, as he believed he had been given a message for him. The first part of his letter described a visitation he had from his f deceased friend and colleague, Don Martin, who asked him to check up on his wife and child whom he had planned to adopt. The next part of the letter urged Father Hagerty to pay attention to a message the author had received for him. He was to “return to Wales, choose Eros, not Thanatos before it’s eternally too late”.
I have sought to locate the author of the letter to let him know that Father Hagerty did pay attention to his message and returned to Wales to ask me to marry him. We were blissfully happy for 31 years until his death in 2021. I added the family of Don Martin to my prayers and wrote a memoir, Choosing Eros, using the words from the letter that mentioned Don Martin.

Your heroism and service is honored today as we approach the 48th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service.
My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer. He was shot twice when ambushed on April 23rd when he was on a foot pursuit of two bank robbers, 44 years after you were killed.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
Rest In Peace.

Don,
Kurt and I worked on your case non-stop for nine months. I just wish we would have been able to solve it for you before Walter Walls died. It would have been rewarding to see him go to jail.
