To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 28th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

Thanks to your friends for sharing their devotion to you through their reflections. I pray for the solace of all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Officer Mardis,

I was born the day you passed and I never knew you but I know the pain your daughters felt losing their father. Please know that you are remembered and appreciated for your service. You were clearly loved by many people whose lives you touched. Thank you!

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up--for you the flag is flung--for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths--for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

thinking of you my brother, my captain....

Roy was in my rookie class going through the Academy for the police department. He was always an upbeat individual. He is sorely missed by me and all of his other friends on the police department. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He was a great individual who chose to protect and serve our community. We owe him and his family our respect and gratitude. Rest assure my good friend that you are still in our hearts and our minds.

Roy, It seems like it was just yesterday when we sat and talked late one night in a parking lot on New Circle Road as you let Amanda out of her car for a period of time. Who would even have thought that you would be gone from us less than a month later. You are missed by everyone who knew you. Save a stool at the coffee shop up there for me, be there soon.

Such a sad story. My heart goes out to the daughters who
never quite knew you and for all that they missed and for
all that you missed, too. Life is difficult, but God is the only true Judge and He is ever faithful and true. There is a day of reckoning for all of us and it will be so much better if we bow to Him now before it is too late. Eternal life is found only thru a relationship with God's son, Jesus Christ. "The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

All the years that have gone by since I last saw you, I miss you the same today. I have all of the fond memories of growing up with you and think of you everyday. As I approach my 35th birthday I realize what all you lost and I pray that we meet again in heaven. We will laugh and have many stories to share. I love you daddy.

Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

I just wanted to say though I may not ever know you in this life I can't wait to know you in another. I may not have any memories of you to store away but I feel I know some of you through the thoughts of others. I love you daddy. We all miss you and one day I will know you.

I just stumbled onto this site today. I wanted to express my regret for not being able to know my father better. I am now 36 years old and I am just a bit older than my father was when he was killed. How more deeply I understand my loss now as a parent of my own children. My father had many more years of growth and maturity in front of him...and although there were many difficulties in our relationship...I lost any chance of rectifing them. Plus, I also regret that my children did not have him as a grandfather. He sang great folk songs and told great tales. We(my sisters and I) would beg for more but he always made us wait. I know he is with me...I bought that farm he always wanted to live on...and although he was not buried in that pine box when he died...I will be.

I just wanted to pay respect and leave a reflection to Roy Mardis. As a 12 year old kid, I played football for "coach Roy". He was a good man, black or white, rich or poor, he was like a father to us all on the team.
