As the first Officer to get to Mark MacPhail in the early morning hours, 25years ago today on August 19,1989, I remember vividly.
On August 19, 2014 citizens, officers, and veterans gathered at midnight to run to the site and pay respects to Mark. It was made special that his son, Mark MacPhail Jr., an infant the night his father was lost, led the run. Mark Jr. wears the badge now and carries on.
It truly was a, "We will never forget."

As the Officer who was the first to arrive to the officer down call 25 years ago today, Mark, brother, you will never be forgotten. Your Honor lives on, and it was an honor to be at the site where you made the sacrifice tonight with your son. We will never forget.

i remember that night well. mark macphail and my father (lester l.warren)were best freinds, they went thru the acadmy together.they worked the streets together.on that fatefull night my father was supposed to relieve mark at that same bus station. when he got there he was stunned to find out that the officer down call was that of his best freind.ive never seen my father cry before but that night i did.my heart still goes out to marks wife who later on sang at my brothers funeral; she was so young and there kids were even younger. troy davis got what he desevered but still does not make up for the loss that marks family had to deal with.

I served with Mark in The 1st Bn 75th Inf (Ranger) C co. 3rd Plt. 1st Squad. He was an great friend, excellent ranger. We roomed next door to each other in the barracks and used to play cards and go out on the town together. Weekends were made for target shooting with the revolvers we had bought back then. Terry Merideth, another friend and ranger from our squad, told me of Marks death in 1989 and brought to my attention his killers impending execution in 2009. I have been a police officer myself now 21 years and can appreciate some of the suffering Marks family went through. Honor, loyalty, and integrity were in Marks character.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 24th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for the solace of all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Thanks to your friends for sharing their devotion to you through their reflections. After many years, you and your family finally received the justice which was so long waited.
