Both my dad and my brother realized that Dave treated my brother more like a son than expected.
My father used to play poker with him, my late first cousin Retired Officer Bruce Kath, and a few others. Dave also was part of the fishing opener group that my dad was part of.
And the weekend before he was unfortunately shot, they were building a ice fishing house over at Dave's place.

Dave was a very close friend and my sergeant. He loved police work and he and I had many beers after our shifts. Good cop father and friend. I'll never forget the day he was shot.

I took care of David for many years. He was a funny sole!! David was a warm person who truly loved his wife Marlise and sons Dennis and Tommy. We spent many hours together just reflecting on his life as a "cop" and as a husband and father!! David was in alot of pain after waking up, but he continued to fight for his family. David was a true friend, and he had many!! David would speak via a talking board and I was the best in understanding him or so he told me!!! lol! I will never forget what he did to make this state a better place to live!

I still think of you. I will always have love in my heart and cherish the friendship we had. You took me away from a world of crime and showed me I was a better man than those I hung around with. I still think of your entire family and will always remember their kindness toward me. God Bless you and all fallen officers. PS "I pay your salary" I always said that to irritate you but in reality there is not enough money in the world that could repay you and all the other fallen officers. Rest in peace knowing you had a positive effect on so many of us.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

No justice was ever served in your case. All the suffering experience by you and also by your loved ones went unpunished. If there is a God, I hope the individual responsible for all the pain has to answer for his action. You are a true hero and heroes never die. Even after two decades, you are still remembered. Keep watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol.

I just came across an old newspaper clipping (April, 1982)of David Mack's emergence from a 3-year coma and, on impulse, typed in the name of David Mack on my computer. I was sorry to hear that he had died - I had silently cheered him on in my heart and hope that he had many good days. Even at this very late date, you have my sincere condolences.
