Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Manuel Lopez, Jr.

It has been so many years since you were taken from us but the memories you created and left with me live on. Not a day goes by that you are not in my thoughts and I wonder what it would be like if you were still here. From the day we met in the academy till the day you were taken, you were such a special friend. I miss you but I know we will meet again.

I met your son yesterday sir, he proudly mentions you. He was unselfishly helping a person in need, as a fellow cop I can tell you he is exactly the kind of son we hope to raise.

Manny,
We attended junior high & high school together many years ago,
played football (go Spartans), you were number 33, me, 34,,, I last saw you at our ten year high school reunion, you were happy, and the same as ever....insightful, caring, and a true friend. We both chose law enforcement in an effort to impact other lives, and I'm sure you did. Just know I think of you often.

Manny,
it's been many many years since you were taken from us. however the memories and the impact you left on so many livesx can never be taken or forgot. you took me under your wing and treated me as an equal even though I was just a young Explorer.. you were like an older brother to me.. I have so many fond memories of you on and off the job.

on the worst night of my life I was supposed to be riding with you and as we walk through headquarters with you I received a page from my real job and have to report to work.. I can't help but wonder if I had stayed with you that night? would you still be here with us today?? I want you to know that not a day goes by why you're not in my thoughts in one way or another.
I miss you everyday and I know you're up in heaven keeping things safe..

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 22nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service to the home state of myself and my cherished son Larry Lasater who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

My friend Kitty worked with you and she said you were a great guy.

Rest In Peace.

Dear Manny:

I have many fond memories of when we worked together, you as a Deputy with SCSO and I as a nurse in the jail. I still laugh when I think about giving you a preventative injection of a hepatitis shot, and you were wearing boxers with hearts and lions that said "My heart roars for you."

You were a great officer and we still mourn your loss. I just found this site through a friend who lost her son, a Pittsburg officer, in April of 2005. I wanted to leave a reflection to let you and your family know you will never be forgotten.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Manny,
Not a day goes by that you are not in my thoughts. It's hard to believe that has been so long since the last time I saw you on the morning of March 3 1987, when we were having a cup of coffee just before you received your last call.
From time to time those that remembered us as looking the same, still call me Manny. Which I consider an Honor. We were, and still are best friends, Brothers, and Brother's in Blue.
Your last words to me before you left to go on your call, "wait I'll be right back." I am waiting for the day that we will meet again.
Thank you for teaching me how to be a better Officer, person, and how to have laughs.
Your Best Friend Always,
