Reflections for Chief of Police Charles Levy

This man was my great grandpa, what I know of him was that he was a kind man. He would help the Romani in Chicago from being harassed, and carry little old ladies groceries. He instilled that kindness into his sons, I miss my grandfather Charles Frank Levy JR, and my wonderful uncles. Charles' story lives on in my family.

Charles Levy was my step-dads brother and I often went hunting with his sons. Chief Levy died before I was born but I often went hunting with his sons and went over to their house many times. Interesting to find this web site to read about him. Lop Prapotnik

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 83rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.

I stumbled upon this web site as I was searching for a Berwyn police officer's badge. A Captain's badge from around 1927 or so that my grandfather Chief Charles Levy might have worn. Imagine my surprise when I found him commemmorated here. He and my grandmother had five sons and they were apparently holy terrors, but they loved hunting and fishing and four served in WWll. One couldn't because he was blind in one eye from a rock throwing fight. I grew up learning from these tough, wordly guys.

I remember my grandmother getting occasional letters from the parole board asking her opinion on whether Doody should be paroled. She always was very vocal and persistent in her efforts to keep him in jail. The last letter she received said Doody was dying and should he be released. Again she said no.

She was a tough old bird who raised the boys and invested in real estate whenever she could and managed to make ends meet. She slept with a British Bulldog revolver under her pillow. We have a sympathy card from Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak who was later killed when an assassin tried to get President Franklin Roosevelt.

My Grandmother kept copius scrapbooks of all sorts of local and world events and are a treasure to look through. She filled the margins with her thoughts and stories from her youth. One scrapbook has a pressed flower from Mayor Cermak's funeral. There are articles about the Chief participating in raids on "stills" in Cicero.

I never knew my grandfather but he must have been quite a man. My father was only about eight when the Chief was killed so he never knew him either. So anyaway, the reason I was looking for the badge is that we have all of his Badges and Hat Shields (Patrolman, Sargent, Lieutenant and Chief). But we only have his Chief's Shield and not his Badge. Don't know why, and my grandmother and the five boys are all gone now.
