Rest in peace Chief Teter, your bravery and courage won't be forgotten. I am appalled at how this jury could have reached such an incompetent verdict. Just shocking! Of course as the top police officer in your area, you performed your job with grace and honor, integrity and dignity personified.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Its been 11 years now. I was so young when u died and it seems like so long ago. You may be gone, but you'll always be my father. I've struggled with your loss for so many years..but I know your in Heaven watching me and taking care of me. I thank you for all the wonderful traits you've passed on to me. It seems like everyday i grow up to be more and more like you! Someday i'll see your smiling face once again.

Officer Teter,

This is something I have always wanted to say and I'm sorry it has taken me this long. It was 11:00 p.m. on a school night sometime in the early 90s and my youngest daughter and I were searching for pinecones in Cave Park. Being a typical kid, she had only just informed me that she needed some for a school project the next day. You drove up in your patrol car to check out our very suspicious, flashlight-wielding behavior. You laughed when I explained the situation and then you told me where we could find some really "good" ones, on the other side of town. You even offered to help, but I declined, not wanting to trouble you. My daughter and I will never forget your kindness. We both attended your funeral. You are truly missed in this town.

Brother Teter,

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Respectfully,
You’re Brothers in Blue

From kindergarten until he died, all John ever wanted to be was a policeman. We used to give him a hard time about it but he never veered from that goal. There are so many stories about Johnny that is hard to pick out one but this one might give a little insight into who he was. Shortly before he became chief, he was hesitant to take the job because he was afraid of not being able to get another job if he chose to do so at a later date. I was driving a truck at the time and he made the comment that we were both doing what we always wanted to do. Since Johnny passed away 10 years ago, I have changed what I wanted to do several times but I know that if he was still around, he would still be doing what he loved. Your mom and dad are with you now, but we still think of you down here. Thanks, Johnny.

Chris

Rest in peace Chief. You aren't forgotten on this day. What a shame for the jury to do that to you. But no worries God will punish him later!

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003). Unfortunately, I had to add the name of another friend. Deputy Jeffrey Hewitt, Buncombe County (NC) Sheriff’s Department, E.O.W. April 4, 2004.

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

Chief Teter, you are remembered on this date of your death. You will always be remembered.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

John was my friend, brother in law enforcement.
John lived and died for the purpose of promoting the idea of Serve and Protect.

John loved life, his family, friends and Law Enforcement. I remember when John was first starting out to be invloved in Law Enforcement. He use it ride with me as a Cadet. He talked, breathe, and lived for Law Enforcement. When I feel the stress and pressure of the job, I remember Johns Attitude and passion for his chosen carrer.

Thanks John and you will be missed.

CURIOUS, I LOOKED UP THE DATE THAT I STARTED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AS A DISPATCHER. CHIEF TETER'S MEMORIAL WAS THE ONE THAT I FOUND ON THE DAY THAT I STARTED. I HAVE ALWAYS CHASTISED MY OFFICERS FOR NOT CHECKING OUT ON THE RADIO WHEN INVOLVED IN SOMETHING OR WHEN GETTING OUT TO GET A SODA OR TAKE A BREAK. THIS IS A FINE TESTAMENT TO WHY THEY NEED TO. A KILLER WENT FREE FOR KILLING ONE OF MY GUYS, EVEN THOUGH I NEVER DISPATCHED FOR CHIEF TETER, ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ARE MY GUYS. THEY ARE MY RESPONSIBILITY. HELP ME KEEP YOU SAFE.
