Reflections for Trooper Billy M. Langham

I grew up next door to Billy's Mother; his niece is still my most cherished friend and Billy's sister was like a second Mother to me. I know what a tremendous loss he was to his whole family and still is. But I also know that he watches over and protects still. I retired after 26 years in law enforcement and often I thought of Billy while on the job. Maybe those thoughts were him watching over me... I like that thought. God Bless all of his family.

I sat on Charle Montgomery's trial. It was a no brainer that he should have been executed once the guilty verdict was reached. One person, just one, could not vote for the death penalty & by the time we emerged from the jury room she had converted 2 others. The rest of us were furious because our struggle was not the death penalty but the verdict. We knew what we had to do once the guilty verdict was rendered.

If you live in MS, please send a letter to the MS Parole & Pardons Board not to release him. He got life & that's where he should stay. This murder was too heinous & brutal to ignore. He did the killing. One accomplice has been paroled, one denied parole, one turned state's evience.

God be with you Brenda & family. I came to Jackson, to the next trial & told you that you had the support of several of the jurors from this trial. This is personal for me as I can remember every detail. Now my husband is a deputy.

Thank you.

I remember the night my patrol car broke down while going from Jackson to Gulfport and you picked me up and got someone to come out and repair it. We were togeather for a while and handeled a burning truck. I think of it often when I pass the area.

I did not know Trooper Langham but I read the ODMP often and send out the NO parole letters and write words to express my sorrow for the loss of those serving and protecting the community they are in. I think of myself in 1981 and how much life I have experienced since then and the fact that this man's life was brutally cut short by those not respecting the law or the integrity of life. I have read what his family and friends have written as well as people who are like me-concerned citizens and respectful of the service our Law enforcement officers provide to civil societies.. Trooper Langham-I thank you for your service and may God continue to watch over and protect your loved ones.

I will always remember you with your guitar playing and jumping into the kiddy pool just because!! When you and Aunt Betty called Mom you always asked to speak to me! I felt so special. I just spoke about you 2 days ago and I got a choked up then as as did when I found out you left us. You are forever in my heart ♥

My father (Trooper Kent Bounds) was good friends with Trooper Langham, and I remember Trooper Langham well.
I always looked up to him, and I though that he was the toughest trooper out there.
I also remember that he always had a smile on his face and made time to talk me.

Trooper Langham was a big influence on me and he will never be forgotten

Uncle Billy,

I can't believe that it has been 26 years since you were taken from us. I was 18 years old when I heard the heartbreaking news. I still think about you and talk about you. One of the things that so much stand out in my memory about you was that you were always so upbeat and happy! You were such a handsome man, and in my "young" mind, you reminded me of Elvis Presley. I'm not sure if it was your guitar playing, your singing, the way you spoke, or your looks-- nevertheless, you had that "Elvis" way! We still miss you!

With love,

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

25 years have not made me forget what a friend he was.
Barbie and Buddy...Your dad was a REAL Man. I'm sorry that you both had to endure so much at such a young age. I'll never forget him or the two of you and how much he used to talk about you. You Both were the apple of his eye and don't ever doubt that.

Trooper Billy Langham is my uncle. I was only about 10 years old when he was killed but my memory of him is still fresh. He was a loving and kind man that had a wonderful sense of humor and a love for life. The senselessness that took him from us was unnecessary and most if not all of those men are out on the streets now. My uncle is gone but will be remembered in our hearts forever.

Trooper Langham,

My father was a State Trooper, and your incident was talked about when I was a child. The Troopers were very proud of you. You were very respected. I understand you were very strong, and the other Troopers admired you. Thank you for your service. I salute you, and God bless you.
