Officer Leinan - So sad that you and your wife were expecting when you were taken from us...tragic.
Four Fridays ago, I stood in the State Assembly chambers when you name was one of almost 250 read off during a motion regarding this month's Peace Officer Memorial Week - you are not forgotten.
Thank you for your service to the people of the City of Denver and the State of Colorado. May God grant you eternal rest and may His perpetual light shine upon you.

I was honored to come alongside your family and serve them both at DGH and later as we put together the memorial service in your honor. Your loyality and commitment continues to bring me inspiration to this day. Certainly, you are never forgotten and the memory of your life continues to live on in the men and women who serve our great country. Peace to you.

On the 14th anniversary of Officer Leinen's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Officer Leinen is not forgotten.

To Officer Shawn Leinen, his loved ones, and his fellow officers:
On this the fourteenth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.
My heart is with all family members and friends who call you beloved. They are all in my thoughts and prayers today. I can see from the loving reflections left by your loyal family and friends that you were an amazing man who is loved and missed by all those whose lives you touched.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Like Shawn, my son Larry was murdered when he and his wife were expecting their first child. Like Shawn's son, my grandson Cody only knows his father through pictures, stories, and remembrances. I hope Shawn's son is living out the wishes and dreams his dad had for him.
Rest in Peace, Shawn. I amy so humbled by your valor and service.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Shawn gave to his community and the citizens of Colorado, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 25, 1995.

Officer Leinen,
I remember when you made the ultimate sacrifice in 1995...I was just a kid who dreamed of being a cop one day. Well, I have worn a badge for almost five years now and I still think of you often. Thank you for being an inspiration to me over the years. And yes, I still believe you were with me the night I chased that man. I will never forget your sacrifice.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Shawn,
Another Memorial Day is about to come and go. I saw a plaque that reflects my feelings.
"If tears could build a stairway and memories a Lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again."
Your missed as much today as you were in 1995. You would be proud of your son he is a carbon copy of the wonderful sweet boy that you were.
Love,
Dad

I was sickened when I heard of this story. This man was a true hero. As a police officer, I know we must face these situations daily... but I am also engaged to a police officer, and cannot imagine being on the other end of this. I pray that the child his wife was carrying grows to know what a real hero is, and that his/her father is just that hero. This story has touched me so deeply... I only wish there were more we could do. I will hold this family in my prayers... and my thoughts ...
I know you will forever patrol the streets of Heaven...
REST IN PEACE...

I'm not sure what made me remember your name, but I did.
I believe you were standing next to me one night last August as I chased that man down that dark alley. I'm not sure how I knew he had a gun in his waistband, but I think you were there with me, telling me to wait for 54. And yes, that man is in jail for robbing that store - although when I chased him the call hadn't come in, and I didn't know. Thank you...I truly believe you saved my life.

You were highlighted on the website today and so we
are remembering your sacrifice 12 years ago.
Sometimes you get the bad guy and sometimes he
gets you.
The shot that killed you also killed a part of us.
It killed a part of your family, both at work and at home.
It killed your dreams, your hopes, your future.
But it must not kill our determination to make this
world a better place or our will to make a difference.
America's streets must be running red with blood with
all the deaths of leos. Every time I come here to leave
a reflection, I feel like my words get emptier and emptier. I am truly sorry for your loss...a loss too great
for words.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Leinen. We honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. We rarely know it when a hero walks among us. Today, because of the sacrifice Officer Leinen has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.
To the family and friends of Officer Leinen, I want to say that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Officer Leinen is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

In loving memory of Shawn Leinen:
10 years ago today you made the
ultimate sacrifice. You were robbed
when your life was taken from you
in such tragic circumstances. If
only that person would have thought
about the consequences before
pulling the trigger. How much better
if you could have gone home at the
end of your shift and he would have
gotten a slap on his hand. Now he
must live with your blood on his hands for the rest of his life and your
son was raised without his Dad and
your wife instantly became a widow.
We are remembering you today and
thinking of your family and friends and co-workers who continue to miss your presence.
