Reflections for Officer Shawn Leinen

Shawn, so many years buddy & you are still in my thoughts. I know you’ve been looking over all of us here, since that terrible day. You certainly made a difference for many in your time here with us. I’m grateful for our time at Acacia, UW, WYANG & simply having yur guidance as a young man. Never Forgotten!

I worked with Shawn and admired his tenacious work ethic and professionalism. I'm always saddened when I think of that night and I often think of how promising of career he would have had. He did not hesitate He did his job with honor and courage and I am proud of him for that,!!

I was just thinking of Shawn and how great a person he is. He was always making everything a challenge and he loved challenges. The last time I spoke to him over 25 years ago come to mind. He was smiling and talking about how fast he was going to make it from SE Iowa to Denver in his Mitsubishi. He could even make a boring drive across Iowa and Nebraska fun! This world can never get back what it lost when we lost you.

I was a witness to this horrific tragedy! And it changed my life! I think of this great man everyday and his family! On the eve of my little brother getting sworn in as an officer himself! I reflect on how amazing our officers are to put their lives at risk every day! I pray for shawn everyday and all the officers on the job today! ❤️

Shawn,

It's hard to believe that you've been gone this long. I can still remember our times at Camp Guernsey and at drill in Laramie. You will surely be remembered. God rest your soul dear friend.

I was just a rookie cop when you were taken much too young. Yours was the first Officer funeral I attended. It's been 20 years now and even though I did not know you personally, I often remember that time and hope that your wife and son are well. God Bless your family.

I remember you as a little brother, hanging around when your sister and I would play, being a typical little brother. For some reason, I started thinking about you and your family today, not realizing that yesterday had been the anniversary of your death. God bless you, Shawn, you are missed and you are a true hero! My thoughts and prayers are with your family, I know they miss you!

I was reminded today was the "anniversary" of your death. Shawn and I were best friends growing up and it is hard to believe, even to day, that he is in Heaven smiling down on us all. I have yet to meet his son, but when I do, I will let him know what kind of man he was and what kind of friend he and his family were to me! God Speed Shawn!

I cannot forget the day when I helped care for you at DGH. 2 days ago, I visited your memorial in Washington DC. To this day, I struggle with the story surrounding your death. I remember the pain that we all felt the day you came to our unit and how sad I was for your family.

Like you, my son ;eft an expectant wife and a child who would only know him through pictures and memories of others. Like you, a juvenile was convicted of his murder. I continue my efforts to defeat the national movement to reduce sentences for teen killers. You are now one of the victims I fight for.

I honor your sacrifice and the sacrifice of your family on this seventeenth anniversary of your death.

Seventeen years ago, I turned on the TV only to see that one of my pledge brothers had been shot and killed in the line of duyt, as a Denver police officer.
Shawn, there hasn't been one time that I have heard INXS, that I haven't been reninded of you. I remember your smile, your laughter, and one crazy day of skiing with our frat-brothers and little sisters. You got the best one of those (little sisters), as well.
You were a great friend and brother. I am certain you were a wonderful husband, as well. I will never forget what you brought to my life. Thank you.!!

I grew up with Shawn, going all the way from K through graduation from Rapid City Central H.S. together in '85. There are so many great memories of him, but his kindness and friendship to me will never be forgotten. On this sad "anniversary" of his death, I am further reminded of his kindness, integrity, faith and willingness to sacrifice for the benefit of others. I pray his family will sense the nearness of God's presence as they seek comfort in this great loss.
