"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Officer Worley, today marks the 12th anniversary of your murder. You sacrificed yourself to protect another and for that, and for the way you apparently lived your life, you truly are a hero.

I read the reflections left by your son and daughter and I got choked up. They are obviously very proud of you and miss you terribly. Your daughter stated that she wished you were there to see her enter college so that you would be proud of her. I believe you are there and I’m sure you are very proud of her. I have a feeling both of your kids know you are never far away from them.

God Bless you and may you continue to Rest in Peace, Brother.

hey dad i was thinking this morning and this past week about you...they showed a video at my highschool about 9/11 and the tragedies, everyone looked as if it was no big deal and stuff but i had a look in my eyes all day of the other tragedy, 9/11 was your birthday and i pray for you every night as i'm sure the rest of the family does as well...as you probably see Craig is being the best father he can be under the circumstances and i just want you to know that nobody can replace you in my heart....i love you so so so so so much...love,

Tom,

I miss you alot and think of you often. You were my best friend and partner. I wish you were here so I could talk to someone I trust. Your Mom and Dad have made me feel so much like a part of the family over the years. Christina has grown up so beautifully. I've tried to be there for her knowing that's what you would have wanted me to do. Matt has gotten so big. You would be proud of both of them. Take care and stay safe my brother!

Officer Worley,
Last night, while attending a Dodgers game, I was bestowed many priveleges. The first was learning who you were. My husband & I cheered along with everyone else while your mother & daughter accepted your Medal of Valor down on the playing field. What a beautiful little girl you have! Then, when the two of them sat down next to us later, we were lucky enough to discover we were seated right next to the rest of your family! I thought I saw more love, respect & happiness in their eyes than in others during the ceremony! I just wanted to come on here and let you know how great they all look, especially your daughter. She appears to be a happy, fun teenager. Loves music & dancing as much as I do too! :)

As a part of the law enforcement family, I thank you for your sacrifice and yet wish it never happened. Just like my husband, you chose the dangerous profession of protecting & serving that other people can't handle. What would we do without men & women like you? Guard those gates of heaven now and may God bless your family & loved ones.
