My name is Thomas Kelly too. My father (deceased) was a Chicago policeman too. Like you Officer Kelly, I am a graduate of St. Rita High School ('67). I just wanted to say that you are a credit to the name Kelly, a credit to St. Rita High School, and credit to the city of Chicago, and a credit to all law enforcement officers across the country.

May perpetual light shine upon you Officer Kelly.....God Bless you, and your family.

Tommy, I hardly knew yah. I was a young boy, just 10 years old. My father still has the newspaper with you on the cover.

I came here today and found you. 5 honorable men died in Dallas yesterday.

Peace dear cousin, for you and your family, for now and every after.

I worked with Officer Kelly and his partner Pat Crowley, who was killed in the line of duty on 1976 in Area#1 Task Force. They were great officers and great guys. They are surely missed.

I had the honor of meeting a police horse in training in my Old Town neighborhood - being ridden by Officer Bob. The horses' name is Kelly - name after Patrolman Thomas Kelly. Officer Bob told me how all the horses are named for fallen officers. I came home and looked up Patrolman Kelly's story.
An amazing man who clearly made an impact on people and their lives.
I feel blessed to have meet Kelly and know the story behind his name.
Your family will be in prayers and thoughts. He's a beautiful horse name after a beautiful man and human being

My late father (Joe Guarnieri) was Tommy's cousin. He grew up with him in the old 69th Street neighborhood, went to school with him at St. Mary's and entered the Chicago Police Department with him in 1966. He loved Tommy very much and always talked about him to me and my sisters with tremendous admiration. Tommy sacrificed his life every day making sure the citizens of Chicago could be a little safer. No greater sacrifice is there as far as I'm concerned. His life and legacy was and never will be forgotten by The Guarnieris.

WELL YOUR FAMILY IS NOW DOING THE SAME FOR YOU AND YOUR POLICE FAMILY WILL CARRY THAT FIGHT WHEN THEY CANT ANYMORE. YOU STILL HAVE AN AMAZING IMPACT ON THE GUYS THAT YOU USED TO KNOW AND WORK WITH. To the Kelly family I was a cop for 38 years and I too lost a family member to a sensless murder, my father. You never forget and it is both sad and happy, you remember the good times, but it seems the bad is always the bigger memory. I am writing a story for a news show regarding parole and how it should be weighed against the crime comitted. I am using Tom as an example so people realize that without people like him who put their lives on the line everyday we would have chaos! God bless you and your family.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 42nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace today. Thanks to your friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Rest In Peace.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I graduated grammar school, St. Mary of Mt. Carmel with Tom. I have a picture of us dancing in our graduation program. Even in those formative years, Tom was a gentle young man and mature for his age. I have thought of him many times over the years and prayed for him and his family.
This website was sent to me by my cousin, who is a retired
Chicago Policeman. He doesn't know that I knew someone on
this Memorial site. I'm grateful for this opportunity 37
years later and 50th graduation anniversary. Sharon Bozzi
