My self and Ed Laudermilk were the second or third car on the scene, the perp, was handcuffed and placed in our vehicle, we transported him to the second floor of the Ben West building. Earlier that shift at roll call Curtis was as cheerful and talkative as ever, a very positive officer to be around.

Curtis, You were a great friend and a great officer. I remember you rode with me on patrol all day on Friday the 9th, I really enjoyed when you would come down to the SO and visit and ride on your off time. The phone call of your incident was a shock and we all hurried to give blood for you. Your passing is still very vivid in my mind. You will never be forgotten.

Curtis: I still remember when just back from Nam, you wanted to get on Metro PD. I helped with some of my friends. You made it, you were proud to wear a badge. But I remember that night when Metro PD put out Officer Down, Car 22 North. I still rememeber when they put you on the gurney at Baptish ER. Their is no way to describe what goes threw an officers mind when this happens. Just a cold chill and then you get mad. We all stayed with you for over 72 hours before God called you home. Curtis you were a very close friend and I will always rememeber the good old days.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

10 years?! What is wrong with this sorry world. He should have been executed! As long as we pamper these pieces of trash we will continue to lose officers. Rest in peace brother and thank you for your service.

Though your smile is gone forever,
And your hands we cannot touch;
Still we have so many memories
Of the one we loved so much.
Your memory is our keepsake,
With which we will never part.
God has you in His keeping
And we have you in our hearts.
We know you walk beside us,
And when our lives are through,
We pray that God will take our hands
And lead us straight to you.

February 26, 2005

You were that which others did not want to be. You went where others feared to go and did what others failed to do. You asked nothing from those who gave nothing and reluctantly accepted the fact of eternal loneliness should you fall. You have seen the face of terror and felt the stinging cold of fear. You have loved, cried, suffered, and hoped, but most of all, you have lived times others would say were “best forgotten.” At least some day you will be able to say that you were proud of what you were - a cop.

We will keep you in our prayers and thoughts. Rest In Peace, God Bless
