Southern Missouri was a wild place in those days often called the Rackensack, a term for "wilderness".
The life of police officer would, without a doubt, be stressful in that sort of setting.
Medicine, transportation, assistance, communication would all be very slow in those days, the 1890's.
But, things have changed in many ways here in the 21stC.
And, that's a part of what any officer back in the day or now bring to the table....the sense of organized commuity, of improving community. We work to serve and preserve. May God Bless the sacrifice these heroes make for all of us.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the one hundred and sixteenth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
Rest In Peace.
