Hi Grandpa,
I did a google (Internet) search today to see if I could find out any information on your case and I did as you can see. I've heard the stories over the years but don't recall actually seeing the News Paper article from the Chicago Tribune that I found. I'll post the link below for everyone else. Really wish we could have met and definitely went fishing.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 46th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never dimishes respect, not even 46 years.
Rest In Peace

On this day I honor the life,my grandfather, Assistant Superintendent Hugh Lucas Johnson. His dedication to work and his family was strong. He has passed these same strong ethics to his sons and grandchildren. The memory of Hugh Lucas Johnson has not and will not fade. Even though I was unable to meet him, the life lessons he passed on through his children I will remember forever. Grandpa, thank you for serving the Virginia Department of Corrections and being a wonderful father to your sons and husband to your wife. Thank you to all who and will serve the Virginia Department of Corrections.
