Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

I'll never forget hearing the news and although it was the middle of the night, I felt terrible I wasn't driving by at the time and was unable to help! It still haunts me thinking of him suffering alone waiting for help. And it ticks me off the perp took a head shot and lived, while a good man died of a shot to the gut! To this day when I pass the memorial, I salute and whisper, "RIP Charbo!"

When I moved down to the Lakeville / Middleborough area
I got a job in Hyannis and used to drive back and forth. Late Sunday night Id drive down to get a room in Hyannis to be on time Monday. I drove by a stop at a reasonable speed in a pack of cars and I got stopped a little while later because someone else in the pack was speeding and did not get cited.

The young trooper was very careful and I realized how lonely the Cape roads were. Many of us sympathize with the people who protect us.

A short time later, I was deeply affected when Trooper Charbonnier was murdered.

Twenty One years. Your memorial sits on the side of the road and every time I pass it, I turn off my radio and look over. We all know the circumstances of that event. You are a hero and forever will be.

I cannot recall the name of the man who ran up from his comfortable spot in a nice home to try and help (I wish I could and I know I could look it up, but...) but he's a hero as well. God Bless him for doing more than anyone else at that time and for looking out for you, Brother.

Stopped in the Norwell Barracks today and requested to see and touch Charbo's memorial. On that early morning of September 2, 1994, I was just a kid working for a fire protection firm. I was on a service call in Kingston at the former Mid Cape Home Center on 3A. As I left and got onto Route #3 I saw a cruiser...I saw a van...didn't think much of it. Next morning, news of Charbo's death. For twenty years I've lived with the guilt of not stopping, not helping, not knowing. I'm so sorry.

I can not believe it's been 20 yrs ago. Seems like it was yesterday. My daughter lives in Kingston and I take this exit where your Monument is all the time when I visit her. I too always salute and say rest in peace Officer Mark. You will always be remembered. RIP

I am not in law enforcement but salute the memorial every time I drive down Rt 3 to the Cape..I have told my 11 years old numerous times who the memorial is there for and to always give a salute when we drive by...We thank you for your service Trooper Charbonnier

Trooper Charbonnier was a "cops cop." When you met him and interacted with Mark he didn't care about the color of your uniform or the patch on your shoulder.
He was a great professional!

It has been 20 years and I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard you had been killed. I only meet you a couple times at your uncles house but I always wanted to be a State Trooper like you. Every time I drive by your memorial on RT 3 I always salute. RIP Mark you will always be remembered for your sacrifice.

I just moved to MA and have been wondering about the memorial that is on the side of Rt 3 around Kingston. Today as I drove to work at 3:30 am I saw officers meeting in front of the memorial. As I drove home at 1:30 in the afternoon I see more officers arriving and 2 Troopers standing guard over the memorial stone. I decided to look the memorial up online. I found out that it belongs to MA state trooper Mark Charbonnier. I read about his life, story and that terrible night 20 years ago. I have a dear friend that is an officer in NJ. I am so sorry for the loss of any officer. No one should ever forget these fallen heroes!

3:30AM :SP needs an ambulance between exit 9 and ten no other info...rescue one respond". I will never know what made me tell my partner to let me off as we were north bound , cruiser and van were southbound. Alone I jumped the guardrail no clue what was waiting for me. I understand now why a loving God took the good guy "home" and left us to save the badguy to rot in a cell. I loved looking him ( Mr Clark) in the eye as I told my story to a jury. My friend I knew you for an hour but you have never been far from my memories. My only wish is that you somehow realized how hard we tried that night

Very sad, remember it like it was yesterday, First time we had heard of anything like that really in Mass that I could remember... Such a shame, hope that the murderer dies in jail. This is one of those things that should never have happened, all because he had a gun in the car, to shoot and kill someone for that is ludicrous. Most officers will pull over a call and unfortunately you never know who or what may be in it. 20 years ago back up was probably not, (as there were not as many officer's on the road then) as quick to get there as it is now a day's when an officer says they are on a motor vehicle stop, seems like seconds and you have extra help. Thoughts & prayers still go out to his family & friends, he was a true hero and will always be remembered as such. This affected so many lives and continues to do so everyday when people drive by and remember what a brave man he was.

I drive by the monument almost everyday and promise to never forget. My 16 year old son knows the name and story and my 9 year old daughter has been told. It will be 20 years this September 2nd since Trooper Mark Charbonier was killed. I've worked for 25 years as an Officer for Duxbury and am honored to pass on this story to anyone who will listen. As a young Officer I was taught to glance each way as I passed over an overpass during my midnight to 0800 shift. I was informed by my training Officer that if you saw blue lights go see if they need assistance. Communication was different back then and it was common courtesy and still is today to ensure safety. During these early years I was fortunate to come across several of the young Troopers out of Norwell. Many times it was a brief introduction but with a few it was a liitle more. Mark Charbonier was one of those Officers. He instantly made an impression with his appearance , his knowledge and his willingness to listen and teach. I knew of his roots in law enforcement, his young wife who was a nurse like mine and his ongoing education at Suffolk. These many encounters with Mark and others were in the beggining years of my career. When I heard the news of his death it struck me hard. If this could happen to Trooper Charbonier it could happen to any Officer anywhere anytime. 3 am in Kingston an often called routine motor vehicle stop. He had approached the vehicle of a paroled felon. He had already gotten his license and registration. The felon had a firearm in his vehicle and knew if it was found he would be sent back. As Trooper Charbonier returned to the van the individual fired at him striking him below the vest. Mark returned fire and struck the man in the head. I have been told when help arrived Mark was on his back with his weapon still fixed on his killer. I have no reason to doubt it because it sounds like him. Mark Charbonier died due to his injuries. The culprit lives in Walpole ( I try not to say his name ). Trooper Charbonier captured his own murderer. So 20 years have passed and he is not forgotten by me and others. One of our newer Officers remembers being a child and his father taking him out to the highway and telling him what had happened. This struck me and brought to light how much time has passed. To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 19th anniversary year of your death. I am privileged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
