Reflections for Undersheriff Alfred E. Jacka

On Tuesday Nov. 28th , 1950 I saw my father cry for the first time. A young boy at the age of 6, will never forget this moment. Wayne loved his elder brother, so very much. It was a very sad day for our family.

A NUMBER ON A STAR

I wish I could have known you Sheriff Jacka
before your duty carried you away.
Your little girl’s the loving Mom who raised me
Who was there for me on every stormy day.

I wish I could have known your face in person
instead of from your picture on the wall.
or maybe held your hand when I was little
before the day you answered your last call.

Your little girl admired you to her children
We feel we knew your kind and gentle ways
before your duty cost your chance to witness
Your honor passed to ones you couldn’t raise.

Barton County lost its brand new sheriff.
Mourners gathered in from near and far.
He was not just a simple small town sheriff,
Or a number engraved upon a star.

Somewhere today an officer lies dying.
Somewhere today a child has lost a Dad.
Protecting things he holds to be most precious
and a grandchild he’ll never know he had.
