Reflections for Police Officer Ramon Irizarry, Jr.

Brother Ramon I want to thank you for your service. You were always kind and humble. You were my #1 referral on my application of employment for the OPD. A very close friend of my then sister in law Melody Melton. I remember that day when you were taken home eternally. I was waiting to here from the Dept. about being hired. When the news flashed. I tried to visit you in the hospital but they wouldn't let me. They said I wouldn't recognize you. My prayers are for ever with your family. I went on to become a Military police officer in the Army National Guard. Pittsburgh California. Thank you for your service, kindness and support. Tyrone Jones

I was Ramons primary Field Training Officer when he started his career at OPD, we spent 9 weeks as partners working East Oakland. Ramon was smart, energetic, and passionate about combating drugs. He always had a smile and was eager to learn. After completing Field Training he transferred to Patrol for a short time. He followed his dream and transferred to a unit specializing in drug investigations. His death was devastating, such a young rising star taken from us too soon. He loved his family, being a Police Officer, and New York. Rest In Peace my brother, you’ve earned it.

Pops. It's been a minute. I have my second daughter Kali Marie Irizarry. She's a trip, only 3 and knows everything. I'm so proud of Makayla and Kali, both are different and so alike. I wish you were here, so you can experience them. I'm still railroading, 7 years in and not leaving until I retire. We are currently building a home, I'm engaged with kali's mom, shes a good woman and loves us to death, she keeps me on my path and take care of our home. She want us to invest in reinstate, so when I retire, won't have to solely depend on my retirement. But with all that said, I love you and will talk to you soon. R. Michael Irizarry

I met Ramon in early 1982 while I was employed as a clerk at USA gas station on Pittsburgh Ca. On his way home from work he would stop by the gas station to check on me to ensure I was ok. He did this out of the kindness of his heart. He was an awesome human being. I miss my friend !

Buster, I was only three years old when you were taken away from us. I have heard so many wonderful things about you from my mother. She loved you dearly. She misses you and the trouble you two would get into.. :-) I am in touch with your son Michael, he is a wonderful cousin. He's always on the move.. Aunt Althemise never did give me the recipe for her home made pound cake, tell her we have to talk about that.. lol I miss her too. You and Tio Ruben stay out of trouble up there.. I look forward to more stories of you and will meet you one day. Love, Marisol

Officer Irizarry- my husband (USBP) was partnered with his 2nd K9 in January of 2011. His new partner IRIZ is one of 8 in a litter born at the USBP Canine Center in El Paso Texas. IRIZ along with her litter mates were all named after fallen law enforcement officers. IRIZ was named after you..... We have the great honor and privilege of having her in our family and as my husbands loyal partner. Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice and know that you are not forgotten....

I grew up with Buster and his sister Sheila in Marcy Projects, Brooklyn NY and our mothers went to school together. Our family knew his well, even his grandmother, Mrs Newton, when we all lived in "the Marcy". I was away in the military myself when my brother Jerome who was very close to Buster told me what happened to him. I hadnt seen him since we were teenagers but it still devastated me to hear of his death.

I think of him whenever I see anything about Oakland Ca and thats why I found this memorial to him today.

Rest in Peace Brother! Curtis & Jerome have not forgotten you.

Every year since 2009 I have made the blue ribbons with the 51 names of the Oakland Police Officers who have died in the line of duty. It is my honor to do this for the fallen officers. The ribbons hang on a tree outside the Warehouse Bar and Grill in Oakland, California for all to see the sacrifice they have made to keep us safe. God bless you all and rest in peace.

A grateful citizen
