So many years ago but I remember it like yesterday.
I worked with Walter Irey at the Police Department in Belle Glade from 1969 until 1972 .
He was a good man, dedicated
to his career. He was my friend as well.

I submitted an update to the information and a better picture of daddy on this 35th anniversary of that Bi-Centennial weekend. On the one year anniversary, the Lake City Newspaper wanted to do a follow-up story. Mom asked me to write a poem. I was 18 and in basic training at Lackland AFB. This is that poem.
My Daddy
My daddy was the greatest,
man who ever lived.
He showed me love and kindness,
and taught me how to give.
He would give to anyone,
everything he had.
If someone said they needed it,
they'd get it from my dad.
He taught me to find good in people,
I thought were only mean.
And how to make people happy,
things aren't as bad as they seem.
But someone shot my daddy,
someone ugly, mean and cruel.
I guess his daddy never taught him,
about the golden rule.
Daddy taught me to love nature,
my country and my God.
But now his body's dead,
and his soul is up with God.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 34th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I had not seen my uncle in 4 years. I took a trip down to buy my grandmother's car and visit with my uncle, my aunt and cousins. We left Florida on July 3 to get home (Indianapolis) on July 4. I brought my cousin (his daughter) back for a visit. On July 6, my mother woke me to tell me that he had been murdered. After the shock, the family loaded up the cars and drove back down. The funeral in Florida was memoriable. I was very proud of him and those who caught the responsible people for the hit. We love you and miss you.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Thank you for the service that you performed and the ultimate sacrifice you made for the citizens of Columbia County. I now proudly serve with the same agency you did and wanted to make sure that others knew of you. I am sorry that it took both the recent loss of another deputy and twenty six years from your incident to get the message out about the incident that took you from us. We will never forget and will always appreciate your sacrifice.
