Reflections for Corrections Officer Minnie R. Houston

I only have memories of your beautiful smile and face but I remember my dad always traveling with us to Trinity at minimum of two to three times a month. I can recall being age 8 and attending your service but unbeknownst to me I did not realize you had been murdered by an offender, but I do remember a lot of officers being present as well as a church with individuals from wall to wall to attend your services. I know now you were love, adored, and admired by many.
My grandmother Georgia B. Simmons was very apprehensive when I informed her I had to work Death Row and escorted the offender that took your precious life. I would like you to know we will never forget you and the sacrifices you made for you and your family. May you rest in peace but let us not forget.

Minnie, you and I were in TDC at the same time but we never met. I had friends who knew you and your job situation that you were so brave to take on. Alone, in food service with inmates with butcher knives. Let me tell you, your death was not in vain. I went to another state that had the same policy of sticking lone female staff in the chow hall with a bunch of inmates. I peronally brought up your incident to my bosses and hung close to the kithchen until enough kitchen staff showed up for work, all in your memory, Minnie. I hope your family gets some comfort in the fact that that your death wasn't in vain.
Sincerely

Minnie was my aunt, my dad and her were the babies of 6 kids. The thing that I remembermost about my aunt was her love for her family! She use to sit and watch us play all day. The last thing she told me was to "quit crying, pretty girls don't cry", and she kissed me on my forehead and went to work. I never expected to never see my aunt alive again. My dad was crushed. They were closer than close. He was never the same. I look like my aunt, which is a honor, I hear that alot and I just smile. For the demon that murdered my precious aunt, I hope you are burning in hell as we speak, anybody that could hurt a beautiful person like Minnie, deserves to burn eternally. I love you aunty, I know you are resting in peace because you are his angel as well as mine. Thank you for watching over me and the rest of the family! God doesn't make mistakes.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 24th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
I pray for the solace of all those who love and miss you.
Rest In Peace.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To my sister in Corrections Minnie: Ours is a profession of constant threat of danger. You walked the line and paid the price so that others could live in peace and safety.
My sincerest condolences to the Houston family, the friends and fellow Officers that you left behind.
On this, the anniversary of your tragic death, I ask that you now watch over those of us who remain to do the work that no one else wants to do.
Rest in peace.
