Reflections for Police Officer Christopher G. Hoban

I remember that night, the NYPD lost PO Hoban & PO Michael Bucyk, on the same night, in the same borough, just miles and hours apart. I remember going to their funeral mass, which was held on Saturday Oct.22,1988, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, in Brooklyn,NY. I went as a rep for our Union delegate, and got to go inside the church, and sit down, for both Officer's funeral masses. Outside, uniforms stretched for a dozen blocks in both directions, 5 deep, both sides of the street,I was in awe ! RIP PO's Hobsn & Bucyk, True Heroes !

I remember that day as if it were yesterday, although I was RDO, the thought of this tragedy brought to light the vulnerable state our brothers and sisters are put to the task every day. You are a hero my brother. Watch over us as I know you will. May God bless you and your proud family. Until we meet in a better place.

I will remember that day forever. I lived next door to Chris and his family. I remember seeing the unmarked car pull up in front of the Hoban's house and my heart just sank.
I knew there and then that Chris had been, at best badly wounded.
It's a small world, one of my wife's friends was working in the ER that night and took care of Chris.
Sad, sad day.

Chris you were a graduate of Xaverian High School who still greatly misses you and remembers you everyday. The large memorial inside the school dedicated to you with your hat and gloves as well as your yearbook photo and plaque is truly amazing, thanks for your sacrifice.

Read about you, did not know you, you are a hero.
You were the same age as my son is now. I
cannot imagine your family's grief to such a terrible
tragedy. You were and always be NYPD's finest.
Forever young, Christopher. Rest in Peace. I read
about you today in the NYC Daily News on the 25th
anniversary of your death. Too soon, too soon.

GOD BLESS Chris and the Hoban family. Worked in the 88 Pct with Chris before narcotics. He was a great guy never a foul word out of his mouth. Remember trips to Atlantic city and riding in the car with him a real professional and a great person. Once we were all in Atlantic City and loaded on the bus to come home and short one we could not leave. Guys were angry waiting for the last passenger. Up walked Chris with a big smile eating a hot dog or hamburger and all the guys could do was smile and laugh because everyone loved Chris and could not be angry. we were all a family back then. Oh how I wish sometimes we could turn back the hands of time. Until we meet again Chris.

I had just moved to Brooklyn from a small town in western New York. I was living in an apartment on the third floor at the corner of 61st and 5th ave in the Bayridge section of Brooklyn. On a saturday morning I was awaken by the sound of bagpipes. I thought for sure that I was dreaming. But the sound didn't go away. I got up and looked out the window and all I could see up and down the avenue were police officers standing at attention. The line of officers was miles long.
Being from a small town I can't recall ever hearing bagpipes in person and could not have imagined that number of police officers gathered in one place. I went to the corner store to get a paper and find out what was going on. I learned that officers from town and cities far away had come to pay their respects.
There is a charity golf tournament in chris' name that I have played in many times, and am happy to contribute towards an event under his name.

“You can checkout anytime you like,
but you can n e v e r leave“…

Twenty one years ago today, Mugsy..
So much has changed, and yet so much is still the same..
There is still the same evil in the world, and Thank God, there are still brave young men like you. That teach us all, not to be afraid to fight the Evil, and to keep the others safe…

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
