Reflections for Trooper Oren Stuart Hindman

I went to school with Oren- and truly good human who always stood out in everything he was a part of. Thank you for being real, Aren't, you're always in my heart

40 years ago I was on my way home from a BHSU JV football game to see my newborn son and a patrolman stopped me north of Spearfish for speeding.

I recited the days litany of events and he gave me a warning and reminded me I have something important to go home to.

I have never forgotten Trooper Hindman who would be killed by a drunk passenger of a DUI arrest in May of 1985.

He too had something important to go home to. A daughter I believe and a wife who continues to serve first responders during the bike rally.

May the perpetual light shine upon him, amen.

I too had the joy of knowing Oren in college at Augustana. His creative sense of humor was always something I admired. We played in the Brass Choir together and had the privilege of being directed by another great man, Harry Krueger. I hope there are trumpets and trombones in heaven because to know that Oren and Harry are there gives me hope of more great laughs and awesome music. I miss you Oren and have and will not forget.

I knew Oren in high school and throughout college. Among other things, he played trombone and I knew him from All State Band participation. We went to Augustana College together and played in many musical groups there. He was a quiet, calm guy. Never flustered, always confident. A great friend and someone you'd want to know. I think of him often. Very tragic death. I'm very sorry. Rest In Peace, Oren.

Dear Trooper Hindman,

I've always looked up to men like you.
I've always wanted to be a Law Enforcement Officer. I want to say thank you for your service and sacrifice. You seem like a very nice man and I wish I could've met you. I live close to where you were stabbed. I think about all of the slain officers every day as my father is a police officer. Thank you for your service.
I hope your in heaven living a good life(Or afterlife), I hope one day we can meet in the great beyond.

I was just getting into Law Enforcement when Oren was killed. Didn't get the chance to know him well but I remember him being kind, caring and compassionate officer who treated the rookies very well. He was one of a kind.

Orin was a fine young man, professional trooper and loving father and husband. He was a fellow Northern graduate and served with my brother Terry on the SDHP.

I was about 24 years old when Oren came to my place of employment to serve me with a warrant for an unpaid ticket. I remember him because he was so kind about it, almost as if he was a little embarrassed to have to do serve me at work. He gave me a lot of respect for those few moments we interacted. But I'll never forget how he made me feel.

It wasn't long after that that I heard about his untimely death. I've actually thought about him many times throughout the years. Not really sure why. I guess it's because he left such a good impression on me. At that age I was kind of a rebel, and didn't have a very good perspective on lawmen. He made me look at officers in a new light.

Rest in peace Officer Hindman.

All members of the Hindman family are wonderful people. I practically lived at their house when I was young. Oren's memory will live on.

I am taking care of your Mom in a nursing home here in Arkansas. I asked your mom about her family and she told me the story about your death. I was very sad to hear her talk about her son and what had happened to him. I know you were a wonderful son. Your Mom is a wonderful person and I know she misses you very much. Thank You for your service. RIP Oren Hindman, you are still touching lives.

It seems like yesterday you were taken from us. I remember that night well and the radio traffic. I think of you often and never pass that spot on I-90 without saying a prayer for you. You were one of a kind. Rest in Peace

Trooper Hindman was kind enough to give a man a ride, and that man murder him. The world we live in is truly a mess up please.
This is why Trooper Hindman should be remembered this 29th anniversary for the truly kind man he was

Thank you for all you shared and taught my mother. From what she has told me, you were a free spirit, full of life, who wrote wonderful poetry and made her think. You were able to see and understand things beyond what most of us are capable of. I am thankful for your presence in my mother's life which has been passed on to me.
