My grandfather Sam Laurie was the tow truck driver who caught the driver who hit your father.
I remember him telling me the story but just recently started to research it. Glad there is a sign to memorialize your dad.

We had just moved to Burbank in 1968.I still live about a mile from the location.I noticed recently they added signage to honor Officer. Highley at Riverside and Zoo Dr. At the top of the offramp I will forever.remember him and his sacrifice.

Thanks everyone for your posting. Over the years I have wondered if my Father would be remembered and my heart it full of joy reading these wonderful reflections.

I was 10 yrars old when my father was ran over by a drunk driver and killed. It is sad that a drunk driver could kill a father of 4 and only receive 1 year in jail. I am so glad this has changed over the years.

I think of my father everyday and have a vivid memory of that Saturday night, all the TV shows we were watching and the specific show when the officers showed up at our door.

My father and his best friend Arley McCreery where like brothers and served in the US Navy together. After leaving the navy they joined the LAPD and both were killed in the line of duty 20 years apart. They are enjoying each other once again .

Don Highley was my last partner on motors before I transferred to the "Metro Squad" two weeks prior to his death. He was a serious, dedicated, hard working officer whom I not only enjoined working with but considered a friend. He was a tribute to Law Enforcement in general and the Los Angeles Police Department in particular.
He was a proud father and spoke of his children often.

I have a recording of KFWB from 2/11/68 which recounts the incident in which Officer Highley lost his life. It so described the heroic but unnamed tow truck driver who chased the suspect and held him for police. Rest in Peace, Mr. Highley.

Its sad that I never got the opportunity to meet you grandpa, its been some time now since you died in action and through the years ive heard many great stories about you, stories that make it that much sadder that we never met. I know you would have been an awesome grandfather, and a soon to be great grandfather as I am expecting my first baby girl with my husband. I recently married last year, and left to my new home to start my own family, a family that god willing will be just the same to the one you created. Dad tonight your great grandson Seth asked me what Happened to you and why you are not here, he wanted to see your picture, we are visiting you here. You died when I was to young to remember so I am only able retell stories from what the boys have told me. You were the first officer killed in the line of duty when I came on the Department in December 1967. I retired in April 2007 and there are 65 officers from our department killed since you death. You are in good comapany and are surrounded by Heroes that have given all their tomorrows for all of our todays. Thank you and God bless you and your family.
