Attending the Memorial Pre event night last night with Larry was, as always. hard to do without you. But seeing Keith, as a Illinois State Trooper, proudly wearing your band, gives me hope.... There is Honor in death. There is Honor in mourning those we lost. Thank you my friend for your sacrifice and for Keith who carries on your tradition of service to all.....Craig.... You are missed greatly.....

I cannot believe that it has been twenty one years ago that we lost you. I remember that day like it just happened. There are only a few members still left in the department since then. I heard that your son is following in your footsteps. Please look out for him in these trying times.

I recently purchased a EX Waverly police car from the city of Waverly, and as I was coming through town I seen your sign (Deputy A Dorwart Memorial Highway) and I felt compelled to look you up. I also took a photograph of the Waverly police car in front of the sign but I cannot share it on this page.

Craig,
As I am sure you already know, you have the most amazing son! I first met him when he was just four years old. Now he is practically a grown man, and what a remarkable young man he is. Carrie has raised him to be a wonderful, caring and respectful young man. As you rest in peace, know that your family is being cared for and remembering you always.
Sincerely,
Carol

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I had the great opportunity to ride with your wife and son for many miles during the annual COPS ride across Illinois. Their presence beside us was a great expression of support and their spirit, determination and laughter was an inspiration to all. You were remembered on our ride, and Keith wrote an awesome letter that was read to all the riders. I know you would have been proud, and I believe that you watched over them and us as we rode in your honor. Their surprise re-appearance in Chicago uplifted everyone's spirits! Tomorrow they will dedicate a portion of an Illinois State Road, in your honor. It will be a very special day. We will never forget you Craig, and the family you left here with us.
