Reflections for Special Agent David Elliott Sullivan

Come back?

Emily

May 26, 2009

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 15th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

To his daughter: Like you, my grandson Cody knows his daddy through stories and pictures but I am sure you are and will remain his little princess. I hope you have been able to participate in COPS activities and developed friendships with children of other fallen officers. I hold you and your family in my heart's embrace today.

Special Agent Sullivan, today marks the 15th anniversary of your tragic departing of this life for the next. I have the greatest admiration for the ATF and all those former agencies that evolved into it. You have a difficult and often very unpopular job but it’s a job that has to be done and you brave men and women do it every day.

In reading the reflections left by family and friends, I got a little choked up. It’s obvious how special you are to those who know you. I do not use the past tense because I believe that you have never truly left them. Despite not being physically there, you are in their hearts and are there with every thought they have, helping to protect them and guide them through life. They miss you, but they know you’re close.

You are a hero.

God Bless and may you continue to Rest in Peace, Brother.

David,

It's been 14 years today. I think about you often and especially today. Pete Mastin has (or at least had) your bike, but since then I bought a Harley too. I'm riding to Madison today to stop by the cemetery. I'll see you in a few hours.

I wish we could crack a cold one together today, but we'll save it till later.

You were a damn good agent, mentor and friend. By the way, my son's name is TODD DAVID HUSTMYRE. Guess where I got the first and middle names?

I'll see you on the other side, brother.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Even though I have never met Uncle David my husband talks so much about him. He idolized his Uncle more then anyone will ever know. David's daughter Emily is an amazing person and a joy to call family. We are having a little girl in a week and have decided to name her Elliot after him. My husband talks about David all the time and we both feel that nameing our daughter after him is the most amazing honor we could ever give him.

Uncle David,
My entire life you have been my idol. Every time the family got together, I would follow you around and hang on your every word. I have always wanted to be like you in every way. People tell me that I have your sense of humor. I'm proud of that.
I talk to Emily regularly, (mostley about you). I am also a very proud parent and my wife and I are expecting another daughter. We are naming her "Elliot" (after you of course).
I miss you and Gunther, but I know that you two are together. I hope I'm living up to your expectations and that I make you proud. I love you.

I was with David the day he died. We were partners on ATF's Special Response Team.

Every day I think about David and our other departed friend, ATF S/A Todd McKeehan, who died the year before David.

I named my son, Todd David Hustmyre, after two men I had the honor to serve with.

David was a good friend and a good man. He bragged often about his daughter, just six months old when he died, and how many "pull ups" she could do while gripping his fingers.

He was a determined and driven ATF agent and a great leader.

One day, he and I and Todd will be reunited somewhere. We'll have a few cold ones, catch up, and laugh about the old times. They'll probably have a good laugh at how much I've aged, while they have remained frozen in time, forever young warriors.

Semper Fi, my friend. I'll see you again one day.

I'm David's only child, Emily! I can't believe my cousin found this on the internet! I freaked out! I love my dad so much even though I was only 6 1/2 months old when he died! I don't know that much about him, but I do know he was a great man and an outstanding father and husband! I hope to grow up and be a lot like him! I love you, Daddy!

David, you were always first class with your dad and me. We loved you with all of our heart and were so very proud of you. If there are swings in heaven, I know you and your dad are swinging and having discussions about almost everything. Save me a seat between you and your dad! Love, mother

We loved David and will always be in our heart. We will never forget his big old grin. He loved his job and did it well. He was like a son to Aunt Mary and me. Uncle Phil
