Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer James E. Hendricks

In 1963 I was a young rookie with the MPD. I still remember dog watch roll call that night. Jim was killed on the middle watch. It was pretty sad. I was assigned to the same squad Jim had been riding, 551. You will never be forgotten.

Sunday, December 15, 2013 -- 50 years to the day after Officer James Hendricks was killed on duty -- Mom, Jill and I visited his 5th Precinct. Talked with the brass, schmoozed at roll call (where they had his picture on the screen) and reminisced about how things do and don't change over the decades. Thanks to Inspector Diaz and his fellow officers for making us feel welcome.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the forty-seventh anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for solace for all those who love and miss you.
The hurt never goes away, but both the pain and pride are forever.

Rest in Peace

Officer Hendricks,
On today, the 43rd anniversary of your murder, I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Minneapolis. At least the piece of scum who murdered died in prison, never getting the chance to walk free again.

Husband, father, brother, son
Friend, playmate, always fun
A hero and an entrepreneur
Some would describe you as cock-sure
We've remembered you for forty years
Mostly with laughter, sometimes with tears
Not once has a day gone by
Without a thought, a whisper, a sigh
Reminding us of the man we knew
How we miss you and how we love you
