There is a very large case in our Head Quarters building that holds the badges of the officers killed in the line of duty since our department was founded in 1835. There is one badge in that case that always catches my attention because it had been struck by a bullet. I remember observing how he bullet bent the top point of the star over and then must have passed through the officer's chest. I was always amazed by the sight of this particular badge because it told a portion of its story just by its condition. This badge is the one worn by Ofc, Hastings on the day he was killed, it is sitting next to hundreds of other badges worn by other officers on their End of Watch but Badge #6384 has always been special to me. Each of the badges in that case has it's own story to tell, but today I finally read the story and learned about the incident that killed Ofc. Hastings, and how his badge was damaged by the bullet that killed him.

This is so sad........I am glad they caught who did this to Officer Hastings. He definitely got what he deserved for killing another human.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 80th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.
