Reflections for Sergeant Steven M. Shaw
Steve, not a day goes by when you don't cross my mind. The afternoon when you came to me over an issue with your pepper-spray, the night you called because you were driving a police car without a hub-cap, or the fact that bad guys all over South Providence called you pac-man for your dogged pursuit of them and their activities are all good memories. I remember how happy you were to be buying your first house with Maria and going over the pucrchase and sale agreement with you after roll-call. My last two memories are you coming through the line at my Dad's wake and that horrible call I got the following night telling me to get to the hospital because you were shot...It was one of the only bad days I ever had as a police officer. You gave it all my friend. Rest in Peace

I never knew Steven or his family, but will remember him always. I was at W&I hospital that night delivering my first son. As happy as I was, I was also terribly saddened by this tragedy. Please know I think of you all often.
Rest in Peace, Sergeant Shaw~

Steven....I will never forget the day we all walked with you to your final resting place. Hundreds of people, civilians, police and family...and among all of the faces there was only sorrow and tears. I will never forget you or how happy you made my cousin Maria. Happy birthday, you will always be in my heart.
Til we meet again cousin.

I met your father at the Police Memorial Parade several years ago when I was there representing my Department. He spoke very proudly of you. I looked him up for the next 4 years when we came for the parade and I carried his memories and stories of you throughout my career. Today is Illinois Police Memorial Day and I proudly wear your ID plate, #553, on my shirt. I wish I could have met you in this lifetime but I am sure I will meet you in the next. Rest in Peace my brother.

Your heroism and service is honored today sixteen years after your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your father helps many other survivors which I know makes you proud.
Rest In Peace

Dear Officer Shaw, all too often men and women like yourself are taken from us by simply doing your job. Thanks so much for doing what you did to keep your streets safe, watch over your family, especially your wife, that she may find peace and happiness and hopefully one day move forward with her life, never forgetting what you two had.
Rest in peace

I still recall this terrible event 15 years ago today; my academy class was just assigned, and had yet to begin training. The spectre of Sgt. Shaw's death hung over our training, and I believe it gave us a sense of urgency to do well and really learn the skills we would need to survive in this career field. I still think about him, and others I have known who have since made the ultimate sacrifice for their calling. We all owe them a debt of gratitude which cannot ever be fully repaid, but to keep their memories and their stories alive. God rest...

I don't remember much about Sergent Shaw. He was the security at my grade school back in Providence, and I would talk to him on an almost daily basis. He was a really nice guy. Great with kids.
The night he died I was actually in the area at the time. I was 8 years old. I can remember that night as if it were yesterday... The were three cars that headed towards his location, going at high speeds. My mom and I just thought it was a traffic stop or something... nothing that major. We were actually in the neighborhood that night because my mom was the city counsel woman in the state and it was business related.
The next night we had found from the news the situation and what happened to Sergeant Shaw. He was ambushed by some robber in the house and that Shaw died and that the PPD did actually get to kill the suspect.
Before he was killed he had already left my school for another school, he was gone about months or so. But I remembered him from the past. Im glad to have known him and many other fine officers of PPD growing up as a kid.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To Sgt. Steven Shaw and his loved ones:
On this the thirteenth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.
Steven, you rescued us, saved our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Sgt. Shaw. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Steven gave to his community and the citizens of Rhode Island, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 3, 1994.
