Reflections for Police Officer Paul Jeffrey Harmon
I was working as a police officer in Ohio the night that Paul was shot and killed. I remember getting a call of a robbery at South Point McDonalds that night. My self and State Highway Patrol Trooper got there and not long after we were called by dispatch that a Huntington Police Officer had been shot and killed. So each December I cant help but to think of officer Paul Harmon. I know it has been 30 years and I think his death will always stay with me. May God Bless you Officer Harmon.

Paul was a good friend. His loss still lingers in our subconscious even 30 years later, when we have all moved on to other lives. My life intersected with his in a local department store where he worked off duty, and at Marshall University where we took classes to better ourselves. The tragedy of what happened that December morning can never be forgotten, especially by those of us who knew him. To the many friends and family of Officer Paul Harmon, God Bless you and know that he was easy to know and respect.

Paul was a genuine family man. He could not wait for the end of each week so he could get home to his wife. She would usually pick him up at the academy instead of having him ride back to Huntington with the other officers. They could be together sooner that way. I remember starting to the funeral but having to turn back because of a snow storm in Parkersburg. I can't believe almost 30 years have passed. I am honored to have known him.

I have ALWAYS wanted to be a police officer to protect and serve as you did. One day I hope to make it.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I was seven years old and will never forget the night that you died. My dad worked with you, but had gotten off of his shift at 11:30. The phone rang in the early a.m. hours bringing the news of the terrible tragedy to my dad. Those of us with officers as family members will never forget the sacrifice that you made, and the sacrifice of all those who serve every day and every time that they put on their badge and go out and try to make Huntington a better safer place. Godspeed.
