I knew Officer Harkins when I was 5 and 6 years old, a first grader. He frequently gave me a ride to school - it was a long walk for a small child and when he was on duty he would pick me up and drop me off at school. He would also take me to church on Sunday along with his wife and daughters. I cherish his memory. He was my friend and I remember him well.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 60th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I just would like to thank those responsible for the Officer Down Memorial Page, Inc. as my mother Patricia Jean was only 13 when her father, John Harkins was killed in the line of duty. My heart goes out to those who have similar situations with loved ones killed in the line of duty as they are working to protect us all and deserve recognition for their bravery as do the troops for the United States of America. He was my grandfather whom I never got the pleasure of meeting, and I appreciate such a wonderful organization for the thoughtfulness. I am currently unemployed but will definately be contributing to the foundation when back on my feet, and God Bless my mother Patricia Harkins, my aunt Kathy Harkins, and my great Grandmother Grace Harkins whom recently passed away whom was his wife at the time. I know he must of been an incredible man.
