Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer William J. Snyder, Sr.

Hi my babe
Today you should have been 75 yrs old. We had so many plans together when we retired. We were together since high school. You have left my side but you never left my heart. I hope you're proud of me the way I continued without your hugs and love. When the day comes that I have you by my side again, I just want your hug and the sparkle in your eyes when you look at me.

Officer Snyder, it has been 30 years since you were taken from us. New England law enforcement has continued to thrive, learn and become safer due to the traditions and sacrifices you, your family, and many others have made for us. Thank you for your 18 years of law enforcement service.

While I barely remember Officer Bill Snyder, as he was considerably older than me. I knew his folks, Jane and Walt, and younger brother Bob, who was around my age. They were a very tight knit, loving, very nice family. They always spoke so proudly of Bill, his wife Fran, and daughter. Much respect and many condolences to Fran, their daughter, and Bob.

28 yrs ago I lost the love of my life. Not a day goes by that I don't miss your big bear hugs and the way when you looked at me your blue eyes would sparkle. Since I was 15 yrs old we were always together, I don't know how I have survived without you. I'll cherish the day that we are complete again.

I served with GCPD Sergeant Bill Snyder back when I was a young rookie on the department. He was always a patient mentor and a shining example of the consumate professional police officer. I was deeply saddened to learn he had died on the job, but I know that he was a great guardian of the city. My thoughts go out to his fine family. Rest in peace, brother.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 18th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Your memory will always be honored and revered for time never diminishes respect. I pray for solace for all those who love and miss you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Bill was a great guy. He started in law enforcement at about the same time I did and we were well acquainted. I always figured we would cross the finish line together. The tragedy of his death never diminishes.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
