Officer Harbison,
On today, the 40th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of the state of Illinois. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. There is no tougher job in Law Enforcement than that of a Corrections Officer.

I was in training with Cecil and worked the same night it happened! Sad! I then had to suicide watch the inmate who shanked him! I will never forget that night! Prayers to his family!

I went to high school with Cecil. We were pretty close. When I got out of the Marines in 1975 I recall talking to him at the bottom
of that long driveway they had in Fairview Hghts. He said he wanted to be a Correctional Officer. I also became a Correctional Officer for the Menard Psychiatric Division from 1978 to 1980. A few years later I heard the horrible new about my old friend. My heart sank. I could not believe it. My heart felt belated condolences to the Family he leaves behind.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 25th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

The Correctional Officers’ Prayer

Lord, I ask for courage...
Courage to face my own fears.
Courage to take me where others will not go.

I ask for strength...
Strength of the body to protect others.
Strength of spirit to lead others.

I ask for dedication...
Dedication to my job to do it well.
Dedication to my community to keep it safe.

Give me, Lord, concern...
For all those who trust me and
Compassion for all those who need me.

And, please, Lord...
Through it all,
Be at my side.
