Jim was a good friend of my parents. My mother was not a cryer, but she cried all evening after he was killed in Pierce Woods. I was 10 years old. My parents taught their children to respect law enforcement.

I learned of Detective Hantschel's ultimate sacrifice in 1984 upon being hired with the Racine Police Department. Each year at this time, Detective Hantschel and others are honored during the Annual Police Memorial Ceremony held at Hantschel Park (named in honor of Detective Hantschel).
Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 49th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
Rest In Peace.

Jim was our next door neihgbor. I grew up without a father and I believe Jim knew that. Before he became a detective he would sometimes bring his patrol unit home and let his children and us fool around in the car. What fun for a fatherless 12 year old boy.
The day Jim was murdered was a very ugly day. My primary aspiration was to become a U.S. Marine, which I did for 20 plus years. Now I am a cop and Jim had a lot to do with me being a cop. I really looked up to him. I'll always remember him.
I hope the puke who killed him is burning in hell.

We lived next to the Hantschels, I was 12 when he was killed. I remember him as a very kind man. Before he became a detective, when he would bring home his patrol car he would let us play in it under his watchful eye. I will never forget the day that we were told that some dirtbag had killed him.
